KSP and Windows 10.

On my desktop computer:

Everything I've tried yet is working perfect on Windows 10 Home, updated from Windows 7 Home Premium. KSP, Steam and it's games, Origin... performance is on par with what I got before, didn't check FPS but i don't notice big changes for the better or for the worse. Only one issue on this computer, I had to reinstall a "fake" USB driver for using the printer attached to my router like a local USB device.

CPU: Intel Core i7 4820k 3'70GHz @ 4'20GHz

RAM: 4x 4GB G.Skill RipJaws DDR3 1333

MB: Gigabyte X79-UD3 1.1 - BIOS F20

GPU: Asus GTX 770 Direct CU II 1058/3506 @ 1306/3746

HDD1: OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SATA3

On my laptop computer:

A 5 years old laptop, I had to install manually the AMD GPU driver, but that's something that was already troublesome in Windows 7 so not a new issue xD KSP runs the same as before, not better, not worse, I'm used to the smooth desktop experience so it's sluggish to me xD

CPU: Intel Core i5 430M

RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333

GPU: AMD Radeon HD5470 Mobile

HDD: 5400rpm 256GB SATA

I updated to win10, it doesn't feel any different from win8. They just shoved their crappie win8 app panel into the start menu, and don't offer an obvious option to use a less-cluttered classic start menu. It looks absolutely horrible.

Going into the settings, Microsoft added more tracking, reconition, and Spyware built-in to the system so you can kiss your privacy goodbye. Cortina is always running in background, watching every keystroke, mouse click, and website you visit, even with her settings disabled. Try to force her to terminate and the system just restarts it.

KSP runs fine, but I wouldn't upgrade from win7 x64. If anyone has win7, DO NOT BOTHER. all of the built in Spyware "features" makes me want to install linux.

Pretty much this. Although I have it installed on a laptop I only use for internet browsing in the kitchen so that I can experiment with it a bit..

So far I have managed to disable both Cortana and it's bloody annoying process that keeps restarting itself, disabled the 'forced' windows updates, got back some nice coloured window title bars instead of the flat white things that MS seem to think are the latest craze and disabled all of the 'metrics' (personal info) it tries to send back to MS.

Might as well go back to Win7 or 8.1 or move to Linux and avoid all the mucking about.

Already tired both of these things. Every way I try to install the drivers fails.

Trying to uninstall via the control panel comes up with "there was a problem starting c:\ program files\NVidia corperation\installer 2\installer core\NV12.DLL" "specified module not found" and the uninstall fails.

You probably have some leftover remnants of the previous drivers from the old Windows install. When I installed last night, the old Nvidia driver was stuck and would not install. Of course, the new Win10 compatible driver would not install either. Then I remembered I have a program installed called Display Driver Uninstaller. I ran that, made sure to use it's option to disable the OS from looking to Windows update for a new driver, rebooted and installed the new driver with no issues.

just FYI, I am also using the 650ti Boost...well, two of them, actually.

KSP runs just fine, I tested it for a bit, rescued a stranded Kerbal and then spent a few hours disabling even MORE of MS's Big Brother trash and tweaking all I could. I am so disappointed that I can't remove Cortana completely. I am not opposed to the idea of a digital assistant that I can talk to like the Computer from the Enterprise D, but I do not care for MS knowing EVERYTHING we talk about.

Performance is on par with Windows 7, hopefully future updates and service packs will improve things.

It does jack up some folder permissions though, I've had to change permissions on more than a few folders to get them to be accessed correctly. My user profile is an administrator, but it still locks a lot of folders. As soon as I fix that, there will be a lot less click aggravation and fixing folders to let programs run the first time after I click on them. For example, I was running 3D Mark and it would not launch initially as it could not access it's own folder. Fortunately the error message gave me the file path it was trying to access.

If you're thinking of moving to Linux, I can recommend it. I ditched Windows 7 entirely a few years back and use Arch. Have a lot of native games now thanks to Steam, GOG and other sites, and those that need Windows mostly run fine under WINE. KSP 64bit in Linux is great too. I just love Arch as I get to choose every package installed and keep it trim and lightweight for better KSP performance. Essential for me as I use an old Core 2 Quad 6600 and Nvidia 560ti with 8GB RAM and have 145 mods installed.

I'm already familiar with Unix and Linux, I keep a copy of TAILS on a pendrive for public computers and a copy of Kubuntu on another pendrive so I don't have to waste SSD space on dual-partitions.

the only reason *nix isn't my primary is the lack of games and native support thereof. I hate having to jump through hoops just to make something work.

But I'm just saying, that Win10 itself should be deemed as an anti-privacy malware. DO NOT INSTALL.

just another fool who doesn't understand what he's reading on the "I hatez M$" bandwagon...

Just because it CAN (if you elect to allow so) send data to Microsoft about usage patterns and search strings for use in product improvement/finetuning and that you CAN (but don't have to) use a Microsoft account to synchronise multiple PCs that it's constantly spying on you and sending everything you do to Microsoft.

Yeah. A company who's trying to dredge its reputation out of the gutter is really going to attempt a massive public surveillance campaign this transparently.

Every bit of data Microsoft needs is to make sure its personal assistant services work correctly - and they NEED to work correctly to stay competitive. What's the point of a personal assistant if it cant use and organize personal information? If you don't want an OS based around that, feel free to steer clear of it. But I'd hardly call it malware.

my logic: if it works like spyware and acts like spyware, then it's spyware.

your logic: if it collects and sends personal data, and it's required to make things work, it's an operating system.

/flaw

I don't ride bandwagons, but I call it like I see it, and this thing is infested with unwanted "features" and no way to completely remove them, either.

your "logic" makes no sense. In your "logic" every web browser is spyware, every other application that has any means of communicating with external systems in fact is spyware.

But then again, you're probably unaware that that browser sends your IP address and the request parameters to that webserver, you just think that whatever you tell it to do magically happens without any data ever leaving your computer.

...So every modern OS is anti-privacy malware? I forgot how Windows 10 is the only OS to do this.

The data they collect has no worth to me, and i don't care. They want to see how i use stuff? Sure. I wouldn't care if they looked at my history - it's boring. Get a grip on the real problems here.

Also agree with the transparency comment, they tell you everything you need to know if you go into advanced setup.

if it looks like crap and smells like crap, then it's definitely NOT a cupcake, and you can't possibly expect me to swallow it.

and if you expect me to believe that it needs to collect and transmit personal data in order for it to work, then I got a bridge in Nevada I want to sell you.

Operating Systems are supposed to operate the computer, not operate the user.

Not at all, you can disable the worrying things..and everyone has a cellphone that does worse things anyway.

Just to add a little bit to the thread, here is a nice guide on how to clean up win10.

Excuse me? It doesn't tell you it needs it to work, it tells you it needs it to improve the array of new technologies it has. It's clearly labelled what it does and how. You definitely seem to have jumped on a bandwagon here - have you even looked at the privacy setup screen?

There's hundreds of privacy options, they can't do much more.

Very true, BUT and it's a big but, they can do more and until they give me the option to turn them all off completely, which they don't at this time, then it's not an OS I'm going to be using.

This is regardless of whether it's for the good of mankind, Microsoft & it's 'trusted partners' (for 'trusted partners' read advertisers who pay MS for the privilege of sending targeted ads to your desktop via live tiles, windows store apps and whilst browsing the internet) or anyone else.

There is also 'forced updates' for anyone not using the pro (who can only delay them while all the 'home' users test them without knowing) or enterprise editions. Remember all those windows updates over the years that broke your PC, well you can't stop them now without a lot of mucking about with system files, permissions and stuff. Win 10 managed to completely bork my Nvidia based laptop within a few days with this 'feature'

I don't think there is anything insidious or big brother about it it, just extremely annoying and totally unnecessary.

At the end of the day it's just an OS that's supposed to provide the means for me to interact with my PC hardware. If MS can no longer provide me with that without all the built in and unstoppable 'metrics and updates' then I suppose I'll have to look elsewhere.
