Top Gun AI - The Official Tournament Thread

Umm....as anybody updated BDArmory to version 0.10 yet? If any of us has, we are going to have to rethink our planes and strategies.
The AI is WAY different, enough that the plane's flight characteristics may or may not help us.

Off-the-cuff changes I've noticed:

-Physics has been extended to 5000 metres
-gun range that the AI uses to determine whether or not to fire has a adjustment. Can go from nil to around 8000 metres.
-There is a minimum engagement speed, an idle speed, a maximum speed
-The Missiles (not pertinent to our tournament) has fire rate adjustments (would help with suicides by slapping into the missiles)

I've been playing around with the new AI and have to say I like it. I've noticed some drastic improvements with the targeting and tracking of enemy combatants

Another thing I noticed is that the AI now utilizes the afterburners on the panther, deciding when to engage afterburners or not ... the AI itself has made some of my planes better although there are a few that don't quite measure up anymore

Eh screw it, here is my 40-ton fighter-bomber

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz8ksGB7j0xmdU1qdkFFWjBZb0U/view?usp=sharing

Equipped with two chin mounted vulcans mounted under the cockpit. If you're going to put my two planes on the same team, and need to remove a vulcan from one of them to make it tournament legal, do so. The inline radar is mounted in the nose.

The plane may appear to have a very, very slow roll rate when it is first flown by the AI. For some reason, whenever I load this airplane after starting up KSP, it does that. If this occurs, I usually fix it by pressing the buttons that show the CoM and CoL in SPH.

The following of it pictures are slightly outdated (I've removed the missiles and the GAU-8, for example), but give a look as to what the aircraft looks like nonetheless

After some more testing, I decided upon modifying one of my previous submissions, the CF-59. This variant has been altered to comply with the new rules, and has some other improvements thrown in for good measure. Both planes are identical.

I would love to submit my F-18. But it uses Adjustable landing gear, and B9 Procedural parts (for wings) as well as tweakscale to get it to look good. Its only 67 parts. Could you allow that?

http://kerbalx.com/Combatsmithen/KAF-KA-18-Hornet  I will make a stock plane with the only mod being BD armory by tomorrow morning. I am on the east coast of the US, ill probably have it in by 10:00 AM

From the rules on page 51:

-No mods. (Except for BDarmory)

EDIT: Ok I read the new rules and it completely changed my design philosophy because its guns only. Do you have to submit 2 different planes or can you submit 1 and have it used twice on the same team. so for example if i submitted an F-16 my team would have 2 F-16's or if i submitted and F-16 and F-15 both planes would be on the same team.

Here's my entries for the next round(s) of the tournament(s) , my line of fighters!

ojVpPrl.png

From right to left we have the Nodachi, the Claymore, the Shuriken abd the Katana.

Here are the craft files:

Nodachi: 6x AIM-120, 2x Vulcan (hidden), 2x Ammo Box, 2x Flares, 4x Chaff (60pts.)

Claymore: 4x AIM-120, 2x Vulcan (hidden), 2x Ammo Box, 4x Flares, 5x Chaff (60pts.)

Shuriken: 2x Aim-120, 2x AIM-9, 2x Vulcan (hidden), 2x Ammo Box, 2x Flares, 6x Chaff (60pts.)

Katana: 2x Aim-120, 2x AIM-9, 2x Vulcan (hidden), 2x Ammo Box, 4x Flares, 3x Chaff (60pts.)

Since these crafts never participated in a tournament, as to my knowledge, I'm re-submitting them. The only changes since this post was the engine switch from Whiplashes to Panthers in 1.0.5

Action Groups for all crafts are as follows: Space switches engine modes , RCS is the fire button just in case, 1/2 switches between weapons, 3 is the arming toggle, 4 deploys countermeasures and 0 toggles AI.

As for eligibility in this specific tournament, I'm submitting  the Katana and Shuriken for this one, eligible craft files for these are here:
[Both only have 2 Vulcan (hidden) cannons, and the missiles have been removed, so they're all set for the tourney.]

Katana
Shuriken

I refer you to the rules of the current tournament on page 51 of this thread

you are allowed 12 points between your 2 planes and a Vulcan is worth 4 so pick one of your planes to have only 1 Vulcan

Short answer is yes you can use 2 planes that are the same however be sure to read the rules fully as you will find a limitation for weapons via a point system. The rules explain it all clearly

I read the rules on page 51 but to me the part with the planes felt like a jumbled mess. Thats why i asked for a clearer explanation

I present to you. The Raptor!!

-Combatsmithen-1-Raptor 2 Vulcans-

http://kerbalx.com/Combatsmithen/Combatsmithen-1-Raptor-2-Vulcans

-Combatsmithen-2-Raptor 1 Vulcan-

http://kerbalx.com/Combatsmithen/Combatsmithen-1-Raptor-1-Vulcans

Uses radiators as a form of "shielding" this is my first attempt at using them as shielding. Only 45 parts on the 2 vulcan raptor, and 44 on the 1 vulcan raptor.

The raptor is a supermanuverable fighter jet which can maintain control as long as it has thrust.

Technicalities, technicalities, that rule page really needs a TL;DR version, but I guess it's moot since submissions are ending today.

In any case the Katana's been updated to comply, links should update automatically so download them from the same link.

Did the challenge start yet? He hasn't posted any updates and he said it would run through february. Also does he record video of it like the BAD-T WW2 Dogfight challenge?

Computer is on the fritz.  It froze and blue screened from the stress of inspecting submissions in the hangar.  I can't really film the tournament with it being in this state, so I'm sending it into the shop around Valentine's day to get it fixed.  Until then, I can't film the tournament.

I'm just going off of pictures here since I can't load the planes.

Thanks for putting the pictures behind spoilers, that helps a lot.  The AI settings are wrong but other than that everything looks to be okay.  Glad to see something as crazy as a MK3 fighter coming into the fight.

The swept wing is still clipped into the type A wing, which is the same reason the Empress-63 was disqualified.  Everything else looks good, the radiators are a nice addition too.  It's cool to see 'armored' planes coming out.

For some strange reason, the images on the KerbalX page aren't loading so I can't say anything about this one.  I'll edit this post when my computer decides to be a friend again.

This leaves me in the awkward position of having nine submissions in a tournament for exponents of two, though.  I don't want to cut anyone out, but I can't just inject seven planes into the tournament, either.  This leads me to believe that the submission deadline could do with an extension, especially since it won't slow down production of the tournament at all.  However, I'm afraid this would be unfair to those who have already made their submissions.  To those who have already made a submission, would it be alright with you if I extended the deadline to the sixteenth?

Thank you for your continued patience.

I appreciate the offer, it means a lot to me, but I'd prefer to do it myself so that I'll be in control of the camera.

Like I said, the picture is outdated. And yeah, I think small fighters are quite boring. I like my planes BIG, and with that came the ambition to design a heavy bomber that could also function as a fighter...that has sub-par maneuverability and might most likely get last place
