Squadcast Summary 2015/08/14 - Those Flipping Rockets

Every 10 minutes I drop a time stamp, so if you can find a spot in the video more easily. Something in "quotes" means it was directly said, though I frequently don't bother with that. [brackets] are those rare times where the accent barrier keeps me from understanding something, and italics are descriptions of what Max is doing in the game, with asides and commentary by me where I feel the desire.

There were two videos up on Twitch when I checked it out. The first was 35:05:

0:00

Happy Belated Birthday Max's Mom

Max will be at PAX, he's willing to hang out if anybody wants.

Hilisa is stuck on Duna, and he's leaving her there.

He's got sucky contracts because his rep is so low from before.

He looks at strategies to turn funds into rep, but he can't afford the setup cost.

He takes several contracts, including a satellite around Mun and science from Mun.

He uses a lifter he's used before (May even be his Duna ship lifter) and it is crazy-more than he needs.

He realizes on the launch pad that the Stayputnik does not have SAS. So he swaps it out with an Okto.

There is no science on it, so he won't get that contract...

He launches...

10:00

Remodeling is done at SQUAD.

Badie (Which he pronounced "baddie" or "batty") is not longer working from a test laptop, she is set up to work properly.

Unity 5 seems pretty much complete. A lot of testing left to do to see if it's something to release.

He drops the SRBs and does his gravity turn. Other than the way too much power and therefore not thrusting, he's doing pretty good.

Clarification: Unity 5 is coming out. The question is if it comes out by itself or if they wait until they've got more content (I assume he's talking about 1.1)

They have nice gains. He is not giving any numbers.

Goal is for a 64 bit version that runs well.

He gets to space, then into orbit.

Q: How is 64 bit coming?

A: It's too early to tell.

He burns to Mun without a maneuver node.

He hasn't noticed yet that his orbit is backwards compared to his trajectory. :o

Kasper points it out. Come on, man! ;)

He fixes his trajectory, and is down to his final tank of fuel. However he's got tons becuase the probe is so light.

However he "fixes" it by making it an impact, and then corrects it once he's in Mun's SOI. It's like he's trying to waste fuel.

20:00

He uses the numbers on the orbit path to make his orbit close, and before he can get it REALLY close it just completes.

Then he realizes that there are no science experiments on he probe. Oops.

He decides to try to land. I think he can do it.

He "opts" to land on the dark side. Now I don't think he can do it.

"You know what would be fantastic at this moment? Being on the bright side of the Mun."

He lands! I think he has he fuel to get back into orbit. But the ship has no use, so he leaves it there.

He renames it "Monument to Carelessness."

He's still deep in the rep hole, so is looking for rep missions. He takes a tourism contract.

He makes a ship quickly, 2 lander cans, 5 (!) parachutes, and the same launcher from before.

He launches at half throttle.

30:00

He realizes he didn't bring heat shields. I don't think he needs them for an orbital flight, even with lander cans, becuase he should have so much fuel he can slow down on descent.

He burns SO MUCH fuel going straight up at low throttle, at like 1.1 TWR.

He gets into orbit.

People start talking about the stream dropping on Twitch.

He gets into oribt, and decides to restart the stream.

The 2nd video is 24:47 long:

0:00

Max burned retrograde to dip into the atmosphere.

He has half his fuel in the final stage, an entire T-800.

47km and 2200m/s flames start. He hits the gas the burn all his fuel.

39km and 1600m/s, flames ned. He cuts the gas with about half a T-800's fuel. Flames start again, so he hits the gas again.

Still with plenty of fuel, he's under 1km/s so I'm totally not worried...

He runs out of fuel at 400m/s. He ditches it. Looks like he'll land on the shore.

He will be at PAX on Friday, may do a special PAX Squadcast. The way he's talking, I think it probably won't happen. More "Oh yeah I could do that." But I'd watch it. :D

5 parachutes is more than enough. The mission is a success. He's at -666 rep. An omen?

He looks at a "surface of Mun" contract, but declines. Instead he takes 2 rescue contracts. They're in very close obits.

10:00

Same ship as before, this time with a 3rd can, and just a pilot. And a heat shield.

The way he launches, I'm getting concerned he won't have the fuel in his Duna launcher to get to LKO.

He thinks about adding more fuel. Were I on chat I'd just suggest he throttle up a bit.

He launches.

The rocket flips, and explodes, and he hits the chutes to save Val.

Q: Does KSP look a lot different under Unity 5 with new graphics and lighting?

A: They are trying to make it look the same. Some things look different but not much.

Q: Experimentals?

A: "As fast as we can get them out.

Splashdown.

He launches again. He throttles up, and I get excited, but then he throttles down again. Oh well.

He flips again. He starts to think he has too much TWR. You think?

20:00

Splashdown.

He checks to see if he's got fairings, to eliminate drag at the front of the craft.

He doesn't have them. He adds 4 more fins.

Launch #3... flips again. I totally wrote this before it did.

I was right.

Ideally, U5 news next time.

Thanks 5th!

A "slow news" day.

Depending how long you've been playing, an updated but largely unchanged KSP may only be of mild interest. However, it may be a good idea to release that way, allowing more time for bug-hunting and fixing, strengthening a v1.1 release with added features.

Thanks for that. It's actually quite painful reading it, so I'm very happy for the summary ;)

Yep, I can't imagine having to watch Max's antics myself without doing serious damage to my computer; kudos to 5thHorseman for taking the bullet for all of us! :P

I'm definitely very excited to be hearing more news about Unity 5, looking forward to next week's Squadcast!
