Arachnophobia is a perfectly rational phobia, I read about some test where babies were shown pictures of spiders and showed signs of recognizing them, and adults were shows the silohouttes of many bugs and spiders and identified the shape of the spiders much quicker than the other creepy crawlies, this is because arachnophobia is in our instinct to some extent, carried on by thousands of years of spiders being a big threat to humans, back in the times of earlier man spiders were very dangerous to us, so we evolved and were able to identify them easily and our instinct is to be scared of them, but times have changed and some people aren't like this, it's very interesting to read about, as for the Cicadas, I may live in the UK but I'm fine with all flying insects, unless they bite, I hate mosquitos and midges and that stuff, Dragonflies I love and Cicadas sound amazing, I wouldn't care about the buzzing, and I'm not gonna click the link about Harvestmen, but I think people may get confused sometimes with what I mean and craneflies, but if you do mean the spiders, no wings, then yes, they may not be spiders but still creepy as all hell!

never met a spider that my cats wouldnt eat.

Was going to mention the same. lol

My cat was my defender. Like, late at night, sleeping in bed, she'd pounce on me ... I'd be like 'WTH?!?' ... she was after the spider dangling down from the ceiling, heading for me. (Good Girl!!!)

the cardinal spider, one of the most common house spiders.. harmless but they are big, come out at night, and move at the speed of sound. (well, almost). not really scared of them if i know they are there but when i see their shadow shooting across the floor or desk in the light of a monitor i can't help but jump.. also terrible when trying to sleep and suddenly you hear legs tapping on the wooden floor at 300bpm. when it gets colder they tend to seek heat, sometimes i find them under my pillow in the morning

my house is infested with them

Spiders are great. They are among the most useful creatures out there. They generally do no harm (though some regions have notable exceptions) and do not intentionally come for you. They eat many of the nasty creatures and critters that are out to get you. They got your back. All while converting those mean critters into beautiful and strong spider silk, like the beautiful little chemical plants that they are.

Spiders are your homies.

I move larger creatures like vinegaroons or tarantulas outside, but smaller spiders I move to my atrium, as I figure they can eat pests on my plants. I even have at least one lizard living in there, but I only see him every few months, he's sneaky.

You'd think they'd be easier to avoid, right?

Wrong.

They love to occasionally have webs just so conveniently low so that you can walk face-first into them. Perhaps right into the spider, in some cases. Other times there will be twenty or thirty over your head in the tree/phone pole/telephone wires/whatever. It is extremely creepy.

There's a GeoCache around my school in the middle of the dense tree area called the Spider Cache. Guess why. They say it's best to go in at night with a flashlight.

I'm mostly fine with spiders but I hate banana spiders, too! I'm in Central FL and a mountainbiker. While they look like a Lovecraftian horror, truly the worst thing about them is the fact that they come out at dusk and spin their webs across the trail at exactly face-level, then sit right in the middle. Best way to avoid them is to ride in the morning and don't be the first rider through. There have been times after a ride where my bike looks like it's been stored in the rafters of a barn because of all the webs hanging off of it. In fact, the logo of the Ocala Mountain Biking Association is a banana spider, and there's a trail network out there (Santos) where one of the trails is called "Spider Kingdom", and for good reason.

On the plus side, they are fairly docile and rarely bite (I've never been bitten, nor do I know anyone who has, but I've heard that it happens). They don't want to be on you as much as you don't want them on you, either. Unfortunately they don't seem to have a very good sense of direction and are likely to run across your face as they try scramble off - wear safety glasses.

Time to install a wire cutter.

The only ones that really bother me are the ones that make webs everyday in the alleyway behind my house.

In the morning, when I take my bike to work, I have to hold my arm in a knife-like fashion before my head to cut a way through them.

The other ones don't bother me much, even when I'm crawling under my house. We don't have those giant things here fortunately.

I have arachnophobia, but I want to punch Mother Nature of Psychology so hard for giving me this. It can be a gift as I would be aware of any unusual small black spots on the floor, walls, and roof. I know how useful they are and before I usually analyze bugs and spiders, but then I had become like a posh person from Victorian England.

I usually see wolf spiders everywhere. I even saw one with eggs.

Camel Spiders!

Dealt with those suckers in Afghanistan. 1/3 of them is just jaws. You have to shake your boots out every morning before putting them on because they like to crawl into things. I didn't want to post a camel spider bite because it's gruesome, but feel free to do a google image search yourself, but don't say I didn't warn you!

Lemme clarify something.

I may hate spiders and have severe arachnophobia. But I would hardly ever kill one. (Mostly because I hate killing things in general. But also because I'm afraid to get close enough to the damn things to kill them. :/)

So I'm not that bad. :)

Looking through this thread is creeping me out, let's look at a lizard! (I love lizards! :D)

EDIT: More accurately a "leopard gecko". I had one as a pet a few years ago.

If you need to kill spiders, I recommend using a tissue box. You can clean up the corpse immediately.

Have a picture of a woodlouse hunter (I hate these things! They are so hideous)

Look how pretty it is. How could you kill that?

Do not kill spiders, unless you like nasty critters. They are good tenants.

Spiders eat pests. Spiders feed on common indoor pests, such as roaches, earwigs, mosquitoes, flies and clothes moths. If left alone, spiders will consume most of the insects in your home, providing effective home pest control.

I don't have a problem with spiders, though obviously if a I saw a recluse I'd be much less likely to feel comfortable "showing it to the door." But that's not a case of heebie jeebies, that's just an, "I don't feel like getting ill for weeks and ending up with a three-inch crater of necrosis on my hand.

House centipedes on the other hand...

http://animalcrossing.wikia.com/wiki/House_Centipede?file=B0060239_10593877.jpg

It's even worse when you see them move. They're as fast as roaches.

Interestingly enough, I don't have any problems with house centipedes. My first thought when I see one move is "spider," but when it turns out not to be a spider I become OK with it. The only times I will kill centipedes in the house is if they are getting too distracting (like earlier today).

Black widows.

Being in texas I see them all the time, especially when on campouts. but specifically when one was chilling in my boot while I slept (During a week long camp) I wake up, throw my boots on, notice I put them on the opposite feet that they should be on, I take them off, and thank god I did... The thing jumped out, onto my arm, so instead of flipping out like a sane person.... I grabbed bug spray and emptied the can on my arm/tent. For the rest of the week no bug came near me lol.

But, those things are effin scary. Especially when they almost bite you!
