I just realised....

Last night, I built, launched, and assembled the KSS-1 space station (like the contract said I should do), the kicker is, I didn't have a single problem (bar the standard TWR and staging issues), three launches, flawless, two docking manoeuvres, not a single hitch. In fact, it was easy. I feel like I've won.

this is not to say that I've not done those things before, gone to Laythe (disastrously), the other Joolian moons, landed at (but never returned from) Eve, Moho etc. It's just that last night, it all worked. And it felt good.

I just felt like sharing.

I am quite comfortable with playing with space stations that I decided to make

of very simple low tech space stations a while ago, just to illustrate how painless and completely safe (good for investors!) station building is.

I was entertained when things went wrong though.

Like, gazing at pretty points of lights in orbit when I installed Distant Object Enhancement and missing the cue for a sub-orbital interception solution then scrambling to prevent a new station module from falling back down to Kerbin. I just ordered up a tanker to launch next orbit to make up for the pre-transmunar injection fuel deficit.

The second time my rocket started to vibrate during ascent. I wondered if KSP started to model pogo oscillation effects?

Actually, no, it's because I had this really, really bright (NOT!) idea to put spherical monopropellant tanks onto docking ports joining a station module to a pre-attached mini research module. By the time the Krouton-K rocket jettisoned its second stage, the vibrations were a constant 3.0Gs at a rate of 5Hz or so, causing me to call the flight "back to the studio!"

Congratulations. You have master the art of ksp...

Agreed!

I had lots of Aviation and Orbiter Experience, but you are maybe a much bigger talent than me!

Make it your way, and show some awesome stuff sometimes, so we can spy your ideas!!! :D:wink:

Greetings Mikki

Oh gods, you may have just woken the Kraken! Your next launch will probably remind you that you are a scrub Kerbal just like the rest of us, and that you blow things up randomly, and that all your launches seem to forget ladders and solar panels. Just like the rest of us...

well, it wasn't quite like that, but a litany of staging issues, wrong size docking ports, and lack of KAS fuel pipes meant that the Minmus Polar Explorer Mk3.14 only just made it back, and couldn't dock to the KSS :(

still, it came back with more than enough science to fill the lab on the KSS, and that's all I needed it to do :D

And Sirine, no it's not pure stock, I use some parts mods (mostly near future), alternate tech tree, and mechjeb for a fair few things, and even though I don't have docking autopilot yet, I think I'll probably not use it now.

I'll try and dig out some pics at some stage.

It has gotten to the point for me where I can pull off the Russian approach for a SS rendezvous, as in straight up from launch without any orbit establishment first.

However, I do manage to screw things up and end up launching with no window nearby, requiring a ton of fuel used and finesse to establish a rendezvous before scrubbing the mission. Those screw-ups actually help me learn things I didn't when I was first practicing docking maneuvers. Never hesitate to try something different, such as launch when not at an ideal window for docking.
