What are the rocket parts stylized after?

For Ven's I just found out if you download the dev build from Github, he added a floor and ceiling to the service bays. That was the only deal breaker for me. There are things I don't like but I can live with and it's still better than stock.

If they would have brought back the barn as they said they would, I could see the early tech all having a junky, cobbled together feel and the later tech being more steam-lined and consistent. But without the barn, there really is no reason to keep with that concept and everything just needs to be a consistent art style. I would prefer the first way as I loved the barn and rather like the drum barrel :)

My only problem with Vens is some of the plane parts look really bad (like the control surfaces, with the ugly red stripes). Also the bottomless service bays are annoying (proving the collision meshes can't possibly be the same as stock). It's a bit of a pain to pick those out.

I think the red stripes were removed. What bugs me with ven's is the jets. The basic doesn't look like a jet, and the turboram has a huge collider bug, making it almost unusable.

Uhm, no. The ISRU parts are prime example of clunkiness. The Mainsail and Skipper are pretty bad too. And don't get me started on the NASA parts...

Actually I was talking about most of the parts. The new antenna are pretty atrocious. Porkjet does a pretty good job but the huge wings are kind of meh.

I kind of like the ISRU parts, they don't match everything, but they do look good to me. Especially the sensors, roverdude bothered to make the back of them not be just a solid color. That's the kind of detail that makes those parts.

I kind of like the skipper, but the grey nozzle extension on the mainsail...

NASA parts: Way too fuzzy, and a bit grey. The new antennas, I think, will be changed to be more thin.

I think the 2.5 meter parts and the 1.25 meter parts both look okay... by themselves. When you start combining them, they look... strange.

I've always thought the term "stock-a-like" on mods was a bit odd, considering how all over the place the stock design is.

Yeah, the "stock alike" term can mean a lot of different things. To me, it's come to mean "KSP-inspired game art, not realism".

I'd love to see an art pass on the older parts to bring everything up to the standard of the newer parts. Ideally that art pass would have a art style document to go with it, outlining the style that the parts should follow with concept art / photos, so that the parts looked unified and worked well together.

Play your game your way of course, but personally I dislike the idea that Kerbals are stupid and make rockets from junk. It belittles the achievement of getting into space, both historically and for the player.

Actually the sensors are Nova's, as are most of the resource parts (other than the large fuel cell array which is my model with a retextured version of Nova's original fuel cell model). The drill is all PorkJet (and a lot of back and forth on concept art)

I agree. Perhaps Squad should get bac9 to come back and work on retexturing the parts? His work (and subsequent design blog post) on the Space Centre buildings was absolutely fantastic.

I wondered about those fuel cells, thanks!

Yeah, Amy is awesome. :) I found her channel a while back while googling about rocket paint schemes. It's great to see her mentioned here in that same context.

Cool to see her awesome channel mentioned here. You know she is a self-admitted Kerbaler as well!

No, no, no. As much as I liked his parts it would be completely something else. The top tier buildings look amazing, but his art style of the parts is totally different than everything we have now in the game. Like I said: I love the textures of 1.25m parts and I would love to see other parts share the same style (texture-wise). I know that black and white theme is more realistic, but the grey tanks look very original. It's just that they need a bit of refreshening.

E: While I think about all of it, I come to conclusion that not only the tanks should get some care. That's right! I'm looking at you Science Materials Bay, or whatever you're called! Eeew! Go cover yourself with something!

Are you serious? That doesn't even matter when you want to hire someone to redo your old assets. Even then, I'm sure bac9 is more than competent enough to fit with the style of the old parts.

I think it would be nice if the parts made by a particular manufacturer would have a consistent color scheme. Say, all Rockomax fuel tanks are orange colored or something. There's a curious mix of grey, black, and white colors, which is thrown off by the single orange colored tank, then it's back to grey, black, and white again.

I like this idea

I assume you mean ALL the rocket parts being redone from scratch by him only. I'm really afraid he wouldn't have the time to do all that. AFAIK we have so many different styles in the game because there was only one dev at a time working on them. First it was Chad (C7), after him came Nova, then he stopped working shortly after ClairaLyrae joined them, then it was someone else, I think. AND AFTER ALL THAT came PorkJet (and a bunch of other guys who's names I don't remember. Sorry!) with their amazing work. They really nailed Claira's and Nova's style (IVAs, the white-and-grey bits).

I say let them rework the 2.5 and 3.whatever meters parts. They did a really good job so far.

Jesus Christ, Slashy now I will never be happy unless I marry this woman.
you and me both
Yeah, Amy is awesome.

Oh no. Now we have 70s funk muzak playing in the background of this thread. And its walls covered with Super-8 projections of bursting fireworks, rockets taking off and raised obelisks.

(look ! a human cannonball !)

I had never heard of her until this thread, but I ended up watching a bunch of her videos. Her delivery is a little too fast -- it's like she has to pay You Tube by the second or something. But other than that, the videos are really good.

I think that's more the "youtube culture" than anything else. Most of the better channels I watch these days fly at a lightning pace. It's the new generation. :)

The OP has a good point. The 1.25m tanks look a bit odd and I'm not sure what they're based on. The others are easy - 2.5m oil drums, shuttle orange tank, 3.75m Saturn/SLS style tanks. But the 1.25 ... yeah.

As for the whole "junkyard" business, as I see it Kerbals have it easy. Living on a tiny planet orbiting a tiny star it's only 3.5 km/s to orbit and then easy to fly around. As a result they can build their rockets out of cheap and rugged, and therefore heavy and low performance, parts. Some of those were adapted from other things. They don't have to engineer on the ragged edge just to get into orbit like us unfortunate humans do.

Mmmhm, I for one do not like the stock tanks at all. Even with the stock part revamp, the tanks and the interstage fairings put me off with the dull grey smudge. I like my rockets white and shiny as they are IRL. Which is why I predominantly use KW rocket parts.
