Mk1-2 command pod orientation in v1.1

Recommended Posts

I solved the problem. I don't use this pod. NE VER A GAIN. It's a pain in the ass to place correctly the hatch, it's again a PITA when you have to place chutes, so I said stop, you stay away from my spacerafts you twisted MK1-2 command pod of the evil!

thankfully Nertea and Necrobones provided me plenty of alternate solutions, especially MK3/9 command pod and 4000K command pod. And if I have to play vanilla, even it looks ugly I will use MK3 cockpit or some stack of lander can and hitchikker. Anything but this nightmare.

Symetry x3 is EVIL!

Yeah, the hatch needs to move. I use the pod a lot, even for landers (I refuse to use the 2-man lander can on the basis that it's utterly hideous), so I'm often trying to weave ladders along the hull from the stupidly offset hatch, then trying to figure out where to place everything else.

Not only does it make sense, but it'll probably look better, too.

Mk1-2 + engine nacelles? RCS in 3x symmetry? WHAT THE HELL??

Anyway, I put my RCS blocks in an X configuration and waste sqrt(2) more monoprop I should, whatever. Ships need only be so small in this game to make it to orbit and across the system, I don't care that much for maneuver fuel efficiency.

As for RT relay probes, my go-to design is 3x (even RCS), but just because it's SO PRETTY (and for that size/purpose, I care even less for fuel efficiency).

RCS works quite well in 3x symmetry, once you've learned how to dock. Everything is perfectly aligned on axis. Another axis uses 1.5x more monopropellant and the craft starts rotating. On the third axis, you use sqrt(4/3)x more monopropellant. If you're not in hurry, you can just rotate the craft and avoid using the unbalanced direction for precise maneuvers.

Engine nacelles are often necessary in landers. The Mk1-2 command pod is kind of useful for atmospheric landers due to its shape and hatch orientation. The Mk2 cockpits would be even better, if someone rotated the hatch 90 degrees.

That picture superbly sums up the inconsistency. While I think the pod looks neat with it's rakishly offset access port and ladder, it does indeed make it feel like it was designed for a different set of parts or something.

(Also there's a lot of support for 45-degree RCS quads. I'd definitely like those too)
