Introducing: Lily

Although I don't own a drone myself, I have done extensive research on them, and Lily's main problem is that it doesn't have obstacle avoidance, which most drones have. The other main issue is the price. It costs $999 (right?), but for just a couple hundred more you could get an Iris or Phantom, which can do loads more than just follow you.

The Lily Camera... seen this yet?

I'm inclined to agree with Fishinferno and windows_x_seven... Wake me up when they actually get to market and the bugs are worked out. I've bought two products through one of these pre-order deals: an intervalometer for my camera and a Copenhagen Wheel for my bicycle. Both experiences sucked. The Astro was six months late and didn't run smoothly when I finally did get it, and the Copenhagen Wheel seems to be vapourware (they are over 18 months late with still no ship date in sight).

If the Lily drone ever ships and if it actually works as advertised, then I might buy one. Until then, I'm going to hold onto my money.

*throws Lily from a high altitude, hoping that it'd follow back* ...

LOL! I was thinking the same thing watching the guy throw it off the bridge. Imagine if the battery was low. Neither would I allow grandma, or mom, to throw it ... smashed to pieces for sure.

I Googled it right after I got the email about it. What I saw listed was $4000.00 US. Yikes. In looking further (Google Shop), I saw other which carried an even higher price tag - including one for $17,000.00 US. At that price, the damn thing better come with all-aspect heat-seeking missiles.

According to the pre-order page, the cost is $719, including shipping

Another wilderness ruining tool... Meh. I like my peace and quiet without the buzzing of drones. I do hope these don't become so popular that you can't take a hike or a walk without being near them.

I agree with you; I've had just about enough of ATV people in the woods, but I can handle them, but if I see a flying machine in the woods or wherever that isn't a plane or heli of a normal, people-carrying size I might just complain to the police or a conservation officer.

The way I see it, if you're going out in the woods or on the lake you're looking to get away from technology and relax, that's why I do such things. If you bring along a flying camera, it defeats the whole purpose. Plus, with how sensitive electronics are (even supposedly "waterproof" ones), I don't see the thing lasting more that a few days outside.

And, this is essentially a device for the taking of "selfies", which are of a narcissistic bent. Regular cameras are pointed at others, they force you to look at the beauty around you. Newer cameras are pointed at you; they force you to take your attention away from the beauty around you. With how beautiful nature is, you don't want to focus on yourself. And, with how much fun you can have out in nature, you wouldn't even have time or want to take pictures or videos.

And sometimes it's better just to remember. Some pictures last longer than memories, but some memories last longer than pictures.

Ok then, my mistake. Bust still, I would rather have a drone that I could control myself as well as follow me around. Lily is lust a little too basic on the features list.

And the lack of obstacle avoidance...

Forwarding this to Philosophy teacher, thank you.

A couple of my mates have ordered two of them each when the half price pre-order deal was on, the plan is to sell the second ones on ebay as soon as they get theirs delivered. A slightly risky plan perhaps but if it works out then they could potentially end up with a free drone each.

While not really into drones myself, I know several people who very much are.

I can anticipate the reaction... it's a toy. Or a fancy selfie (filthy habit, that) camera at best.

Not to say I wouldn't take one if it fell on me, but I'd pull it to bits before I actually used it for intended purposes.

Drones that do something useful or are even just fun to fly I can dig, but this appears to be for people who want fancy pictures / videos of themselves with no photography or piloting skills required.

This product gets a solid "Meh" from me, unless of course it proves to be highly moddable. ;)

Oh, and if I see one of these "flying cameras" anywhere near me I am liable to deploy "countermeasures".

A question for Lily and other camera-drones enthusiasts : what would you use this camera for ? Genuine question.

I wrote that GoPros frightened me at first, but I see many situations where first-person POV images can be appealing, including the highly-attractive, never-advertised fantasy to wear a GoPro in the bedroom... I wager grandma's pearls that it played a considerable role in their success.

On the other hand, I don't see a lot of, say "common" applications for camera-drones.

My first impression, kinda confirmed by the direction this thread has promptly taken, is that they mainly appeal to our fascination for intrusive technologies.

Fine, my grandpa bought a few spy pens too, and the streets are full of photographers taking candid pictures. Seems to me that using a drone to fulfill the inquisitive purposes it is associated to is a difficult task. Looks more like buying a possibility. How many times will a drone be really sent on a dareful flight over a plunging neckline ?

I work with a guy who dropped some $5K on a really nice camera drone. He uses it for video in his side job as a photographer. Another friend just built a racing drone; I'm waiting for the eventual crash and burn post about it. Some other guy I know built a quadcopter, seemed really happy about it, then crashed it. Since he got his actual plane up and running I haven't seen word one about the drone even though he's still cranking out other projects in the local maker-space. Then there's all the little drones my co-workers fly around the office...

Most drones are ... toys. Lily? Lily is a glorified selfie-stick.

I see drones such as Lily as a novelty, a fad, which in time will fall by the wayside... but not before being used for the ultimate selfies. Same with the 'Hey look at me and what I'm doing!' GoPro.

In the real world however, there are uses for drones ... yea, as you would guess, military ... but also many other applications where risk elimination is a priority, of which I'm sure any of you could name a few instances.

It's a valid opinion, even if you disagree with it.
True but I just got this utter feeling that its going to start a flamewar. he does raise a few facts that taking selfies is nonsense. if I were to get these, I would use them for scenic shots. I have an ARDrone 2 and I use it to make panoramic videos.

90% of the time spent involving this would be keeping mom away. "I took it out of the basment, threw it and I just crashed!" "It has a battery, mom. And you weren't wearing the bracelet."

I live in HK, the land of annoying mainlanders tourists with selfie sticks. Oh god, when this goes on the market I will need to get a miniature AA gun to protect my hair.

I also know my next school history project. Working 1/50 scale model of the bofors.

Or maybe a scale model hurricane/spitfire.
