And the bad part is that I live in Chile.

But our buildings are fine.

Tsunami warning on the coast, sucks that a large part of my family lives there.

I will keep you informed as this thing progresses.

And just as I'm writing this, aftershock.

Holy Himmel!

Good to see no one is dead as of yet. Plenty of injured, I assume?

Earthquakes are quite a hazard. I havent really experienced one myself.

F5 tornadoes, though.... *shivers*

The only people who die at this type of stuff here in Chile, is mainly because of:

a)They get scared and they have a heart attack.

b)They don't evacuate the area and tsunami strikes.

c)They live in a mud house and it falls down.

Unless it's really really big (like the 8.8 quake in 2010), buildings won't come down, that means, almost nobody is injured.

Nah, except the 8.3 one, those are aftershocks, anything below 7.0 will be a medium-intensity-quake for us. (most of us, actually).

I once experienced a very very small earthquake here in North Carolina that came from Virginia. I was very surprised to see one of my pillows vibrating even after the speaker was turned off, and realized that in fact the whole house was vibrating. That is, iirc, the only time in recorded history that North Carolina has experienced an earthquake.

Of course, no one was hurt by this small earthquake (although in Virginia some plates were knocked off cabinets and were shattered.)

So this story isn't really applicable. All I can say is that that kinda really sacks for all the Chileans.

For the past seven years, I have been doing side research on the strong magnitude earthquakes. In this article from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the earthquake that destroyed Japan a few years back actually shifted the earth's axis by nearly 17 centimeters (that earthquake was a 9.0). The one that hit Indonesia before that also shifted the Earth's axis by about 8 centimeters (it was a 7.2). Already, NASA is predicting that once the data is analyzed, we could see another axis shift of between 5 to 12 centimeters. Already, the speculation is in that this will speed up the rotation of the Earth and could possibly affect our N/S axis tilt (as did the other two). What this means is that the northern hemisphere may be knocked further from the sun (and conversely, the southern hemisphere will be closer to the sun) because of the change in degrees of the Earth's wobble. Even during the summer months, the northern hemisphere will experience cooler temperatures by a few degrees.

Talk about catastrophic climate change...

Shhhh... you'll ruin the day of those who think climate change is caused by man.

I remember reading about this, but not from that NASA article. My opinion?... I think we're headed toward another Maunder Minimum. I'll take cold over hot.
