Why I like the KSP moderators

Unlike on other sites where the mods basically give an infraction to anyone who posts in the wrong place, the KSP moderators from what I have observed only give infractions if you break the same rules constantly ignoring whatever the moderator told that person. They also are a lot nicer and are a lot social and friendly than on other sites, replying to threads frequently and stuff, not just when they are moving or locking a thread.

That is very nice of you Clockwork13, we all want to stay active as community members rather than become aloof psudo-rulers lording it over the community, we're all from this community after all, we just volunteer to help keep the place tidy as well :)

I almost never got an answer to a private message from a moderator on forums of other games, they consider themselves cybergods with special rights. KSP forum moders are like millon times more helpful and polite, they don't refrain from answering to private messages and do it in the most informative way.

I think a good deal of it has to do with the fact that *most* moderators on the KSP forums are people who were a "normal" member of the community so to speak beforehand, then promoted up. Also, they legitimately actually know have and play(ed) the game, as opposed to being generic hired moderators.

I imagine that for the forums of some games for larger companies that they might just hire people to be moderators, who may or may not have had any actual interaction with the game before they were hired as moderators, so there's that. Sure, a lot of large companies have good hired community managers, which can help a lot, but if the moderators are chosen haphazardly, and maybe even required to spend a certain amount of time on the forums (i.e it's their job and they're not doing it just because they want to), then that could result in moderators simply not giving a care. In that case, you get generic responses like:

"Hi,

Sorry, answering questions about whether i'm having a good day are not in my job description.

-George01, Electron Artistry Senior Assigned Moderator of Game Support"

And encouraging the moderators to actually also participate in the community is good too, otherwise they just become too far-removed from what's actually going on, having them actually have been in the other posters shoes at one point helps, otherwise you get:

"Someone posted a reaction image, obviously didn't read the 5 page rules (sacred tome!), section 4.3. bah, filthy N00B, get out of my forum, worm *infraction*"

...KSP's moderators (probably) go:

"Hm, yeah, that rule is a little stiff, i'll just remove it and give them a PM not to do it again, I did the same thing when I was new to the forum"

(my two funds)

That's part of why I'm doing the Elcano Challenge. It's a long one for sure, but I've not done a challenge in a while and I was missing that kind of interaction. :)
