{AMRSD} Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" and B-29 "Superfortress"

Recommended Posts

Hi all, thanks for taking a look at my latest craft!

The Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to break the speed of sound, on October 14, 1947. The Bell X-1 is carried to altitude by a B-29 Superfortress, then dropped to accelerate to a bit over mach 1.

Enough history, let's have some pictures:

How to fly:

Take off.

Turn 90 degrees to the left.

Climb to 3000m, this will take a while. Browse the forums for a bit.

Drop the bell X-1.

Climb at a 20 degree angle to 4000m, then level off and go supersonic. 333m/s is about right.

Land. Now, they both can land, separately. I haven't got the B-29 and the X-1 landed on the same flight.

Note: This thing loves to run into watermodule.slider.collider, or have bits of it randomly overheat. Warranty voided by visiting forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com.

Enjoy!

Hey man,

I flew it and I really had fun! It's easy to fly and handles fine. Flying the X-1 was super fun too. Good job man.

I did think it could be cleaner though. You could hide some if not all of the wing struts. It really does look better when they are hidden. The cockpit view is a bit broken by the three clipped cockpits And the tail could be cleaner too, but these are minor niggles.

It was a lot of fun and I really got that test pilot feel!

Rep for ye!

Thanks! Thanks you for the suggestions too, I'm always happy to get suggestions. The struts should be hidden, yes, and the tail isn't my favorite, but there's a bunch of z-fighting if it's perfectly flat. Probably a rebuild of the tail would be best for that. The cockpit view is weird, but I wanted a low-part-count way to make the large window, and that looked right. If I was just releasing the X-1, I might have made custom windows.

No problem mate! There are always ways something can be improved. Struts is just the easiest to clean up. I tried removing the longer ones but it really needs those!

Yeah the tail is tricky due to the flatness. I'm sure it would be possible to approximate the tail shape with no z-fighting. As I said they are minor issues.
