May I ask, what's the Delta V of the Hermes?

Short answer: A insanely high one.

To do 2 trip to mars, 2 trip back to earth, two of these trip can be at the best window, but the two other have to be at almost the worst. You need a bare minimum of what, 20000 dV?

Now, notice the size of the fuel tanks. unless its fill with mercury, it will be a very small portion of the full weight of the ship. What would happen if you would create a ship with a much higher fuel ratio?

Wow. Great progress here. The MDV is really slick. Very much like I imagined it. Do you think you'll realistically be able to cram enough fuel into it while keeping it plausible? Is a second stage or drop tanks an option? It just doesn't look like it'd quite be able to deorbit, reenter, and land with just the fuel on board.

How feasible will it be to fly up the individual modules of Hermes in reasonable looking rockets? Does the centrifuge come apart, or is it all once piece?

Does anyone know what the 4 parts of the rotating ring are? From the movie one was the galley, and one was the workout room. One of the youtube trailers showed the captain's office and there was gravity so i would assume that was another, and maybe the last one is the sleeping quarters?

Recreation room, gym, personal quarters. IDK what is the 4th one.

P.S. Just came from the theater. Yeaaaa!

davidy12 yep an insanely high one

curtquarquesso Thanks, it's 3.75 so it'll have wayy enough space for fuel. They used a couple set of chutes and powered landed on the last second.

RoverDude Thanks man!

sashan Congrats on watching the movie :D

I was just thinking a Recreation room, Gym, Personal Quarters and a Science lab

Hey, I know that your first page render is not finished, but I'm fairly sure your ring is a bit close to your command pod (if you look at the structural tube's variations there's a section that should be longer), and your command pod may be a bit large. Just some observations, to help.

I am sure that I am not the only one to notice that the front docking port is not aligned to the center of mass. Since the other docking port are even more off center, its will be hard to carry anything external. Do you have a idea on how to deal with this problem ?

I am not sure we can share certain websites but I found a good copy of the The Martian. Its still Cam copy but its steaming on a website that doesn't seem too sketchy. If you would like the link PM me. Maybe you can see parts of the Hermes that you might have missed.

CommanderSpock Its just the angle messing with u:sticktongue:

NuclearNut The reactor is just gonna be a reactor, no IVAs

sp1989 Don't share those links in the forum.. I've already found a pretty good one so I'll just stick to that.

MDV in game and ready to go, just the texture left

Thanks guys

theJesuit In the book it says "First, we descended from Hermes", so im assuming it was already docked with the hermes before they got to mars.

OrbitalEscape Awesome!

Sgt.Shutesie Nice, type [imgur] the imgur code and close off the tag with /

update :P

That looks pretty right, he said it descended on a combination of chutes and thrusters, and could have been a bit unstable as it ended up on it's side.

I think the descent vehicle could be something like or an iteration of the Orion capsule. I mean if we are basing this on the movie, at the end they launch to the Hermes on a Delta Heavy. It was basically the launch of the EFT-1. Since we saw the Hermes on the way coming back to earth there was no sign of an MAV or an MDV or an MPCV attached I think we can a assume that the MDV is also the vehicle they launch from earth with. That would actually be a pretty efficient way of doing things.

I don't think so.. They saved money by just showing EFT-1. They do use Orion but on an SLS.

I asked Andy Weir and looked at the movie PDF. They launch on an SLS in an Orion, go to the SpaceX station for a re-fuel and then go to EML2. The Orion docks and then goes home.

The MDV lands with the rovers on it, I would guess that it waits in Mars orbit for theHermes after being launched.

Right but that would make sense in the book. The rovers in the movie are quite a bit larger and an MDV with both movie rovers logistically would be enormous. Unless it was sent ahead like a constellation program. Unless they docked the front of the Hermes to the MDV with the rovers. Still if that's the case then why not go with the constellation program. Why would they launch to the Hermes in an SLS? That's a lot of rocket to dock to a ship in LEO. A Delta Heavy if they got it man rated would be a fine choice to launch a large Orion capsule to LEO even an Atlas V. If Space X has a space station why wouldn't they use what would most likely be a second or third generation dragon rider. I mean I don't mean to question Andy Weir but even he has to admit SLS to LEO is a bit much.

How would that work ingame? Plus, I can't picture that in the movie or book. Wouldn't it be easier to land them separately?

Thats how the constellation program was planned. However I just don't see that with the way Andy Weir setup the Ares program in the book and it certainly doesn't look like that in the movie. I pictured a slightly modified version of the constellation program when I read the book. Fast forward to 5 minutes to see how they could land 2 rovers and an MAV. In the constellation program the MDV was the MAV too and had two rovers. Man I would have loved to see that program!

Oh wait, I think I saw a giant rig/launchpad with rovers in it. Now I get it.

Nope I looked there is nothing indicating anything like that in the movie.

That's a lot of rocket to dock to a ship in LEO.

Hermes is a low-thrust craft, it doesn't like deep gravity wells - takes a lot of time to get out of them. I guess they would be starting from one of Lagrange points of moon. That also explains SLS.
