The large engines are the descent engines for when it gets dropped off. There are technically 3 stages. Descent, Ascent 1, Ascent 2, and then the command pod. I've tried to replicate in KSP with little luck. It's really hard to get good shots of the MAV, especially of the core stage. It's difficult to tell how many radial engines are on the MAV core, but there are at least greater than five I believe. I'm not sure how accurate you're planning on going with this, but that's what I know about the MAV. Will the capsule be of similar design to the MDV capsule?
