Space Suit Color Coding

Recommended Posts

It would be cool if the Space Suits of Kerbins were color coded in accordance with their occupations. Red stripes for pilots, blue for scientists, and gold for engineers. It would also be nice to know what the occupation of a Kerbin was before you accept the rescue mission for them, like mention it in the description. I have more pilots than I could ever need, and only about 4 or 5 engineers.

This is a great idea. In general, Kerbals are just too generic; other than having two genders, all of them look exactly alike.

Other than making them colored differently per profession:

- let the orange-suit Kerbals ACTUALLY HAVE ORANGE SUITS. Mind-blowing, I know. :)

- Within each profession, have some sort of differentiator by level, so that a Level 3 engineer has a different look than a Level 0. Maybe get a chest insignia at level 1 that gets fancier with level, or something. Doesn't have to be super obtrusive, something subtle would do.

Well, they already have those red stripes on their helmets. How about:

- Suit color is orange for the Fab Four, white for everyone else

- Helmet stripes are colored by profession

- Level is indicated by something visible but not too gaudy. Maybe something subtle about the stripe pattern on the helmet, or a chest insignia, or something.

And this would be true to real life too... the ISS EVA Lead has red bands on his spacesuit around his biceps and thighs, and the secondary does not.

That's a tradition started after they realized they couldn't tell who was who on Apollo 11, and indeed for the longest time thought they didn't have ANY pictures of Armstrong on the Lunar surface.

TextureReplacer mod allows you to assign different suits by profession (as well as lots of other options).

PortraitStats mod adds icons for experience stars and profession in the portrait cameras during flight.

Nice. Good thing we have those mods. Seems we don't need that in stock anymore! We're done here! Close the thread!

Well, "there's a mod for that" doesn't address the desire to have the feature in the stock game. But it is a useful thing to know about. If a player is pining away wishing for a feature, it's good to know what the options are, and "there's a mod for that" is helpful information.

Thanks for the tip, JPLRepo. Here, have some rep. :)

I also absolutely hate when people post that. We are here for suggestions to implement in the stock game.

I know what you mean, but you do know that was sarcasm, right? ;)

I know, its all good mate.

I normally preface my own suggestion threads with "this is a suggestion for the stock game" or something similar to prevent mod suggestions from appearing in my own threads.

So I didn't read "what I would like in stock KSP" - shoot me down. I simply suggested two mods that give what you wanted right now in KSP. If you wish to wait for stock to ever implement these features (read that as you will, IMHO that's in one year or never given how much Squad has on their list already) that's Your prerogative. :)

Personally, I don't like the idea of color-coding spacesuits by career, nor do I like the distinction between veterans/rookies by having orange/grey suits.

I'd prefer allowing each Kerbal to be cross-trained in specific skills, and have them all wear orange suits. Veterancy can be determined by the number of stars in their profile.
