Cassini beginning flybys of Enceladus

I still don't fully understand this "no necro under any circumstances ever" policy. If a topic becomes irrelevant and the thread dies, then the topic becomes relevant again, isn't it more convenient to use the existing thread wherein we can see and respond to people's old posts? That and I feel like it keeps the forum marginally neater.

That's because - from my understanding - that's not the policy. That 2-year-old thread had like 5 posts and didn't talk about Enceladus. It wasn't a general catch-all thread about Cassini either. It was about a single (albeit cool) photo. This has nothing to do with that so should not be posted there.

If Cassini took a 2nd photo, similar to the original, then that would be a reasonable - uh - reason to post there, and a valid necro.

It's going to be moving too fast. It'll be traveling at 8500 meters a second relative to the surface. If it hits a speck of dust or ice at that speed it will break. It's going through the plumes. Can we not sample the plumes from outside them? Like analyzing the spectrum or something? The spectrum is obvious, the plumes are ice and will be reflecting lots of light we can get a spectrum from. I don't know it it is worth sending Cassini into the plumes for this "flying shrimp hitting the camera" situation (:D).

It's the Kerbal way?

You could have me fooled.

Perfect example: My Video thread. Also, my ModMan Configs thread. I reply to the video one every time I start a new series and the config one every time I write a new config. It's easily months for the videos (I tend to start a new series every major update) and I don't even know the last time I posted on the other one. But if I start a new series or write a new config, I'll update those threads without a thought and I can't imagine the moderators even considering that bad. Even if it's years later.

First images, the raw image site however is somewhat buggy, keep geeting 404s, bad links and unloaded images

Also, I'm struggling to understand what this is. It said it was taken October 28th, however the target is "UNK" (unknown). Also don't understand why, despite being raw, it's not at full 1024x1024 resolution.

Now they've taken them off the raw image website. NASA doing weird stuff!

Those are some plumes!!!! (btw, still getting 404s)

Whaaat??? They've taken them off again... hopefully they fix whatever problem they're having, can't wait to see all of the images.

Microorganisms are still life, which would annihilate everyone who says life is only on Earth. Enceladus life hype!

I'm not aware of anyone that claims that life is only on Earth.

and Cassini won't find microorganism even if they are there.

So.... turn down your hype level.

The flyby should still be really cool

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
