yea maybe but I read the rules and replied and I really didn't look at the other submissions or the dates they were posted

Please check the post dates next time before you post this sort of comment. It only takes 2 seconds to scroll down. Anyway, go ahead and give this challenge a shot.

Hi FCISuperGuy!  I completed the STS Flight Director Mission, boosting the Inigma Industries 42t fuel pod to a height of 208km.  I was pretty surprised it could actually lift that weight given the enormous offset of the cargo and no running engines on the Buran during launch.  It was seriously tight, but I made it.

I guess I'll loop back round and complete STS Commander - Rank 1 to get the accuracy landing badge before I move on to missions STS2-7A, unless you think that is not required based on this flight, or my Buran thread where I believe I show an accurate launch and landing which would earn me the STS Commander Rank 1 anyway.  Let me know!

Thanks, great challenge.

Great job! Here's your well-deserved Flight Director badge:

The Flight Director badge is in its own ranking class - if you've got it, you don't need to do Rank 1. However, you can still do the rest of the missions and achieve those ranks.

Hi FCISuperGuy I'm back again, and thanks for another great stage in this challenge.

This time I took on the STS-2 Commander - Rank 2 - Reach an orbit of 350+km and deploy your two comsats with spin stabilization (using the provided Sepratrons) to geostationary orbits. Deorbit and land at either at the KSC, the Island Airfield just off of KSC, or at any Kerbal Konstructs airport.  Let's see how I got on shall we?  Mission report here for your inspection and award or otherwise :)

It was a pretty complex mission in terms of getting the staging and mission profile right, but de-orbit turned out to be a matter of reentry a couple of times, followed by a third down to the deck.  I timed it well but had to kick the jets in for the last couple of km to the runway.  The jets on the Buran really came into their own there!

As a side note, if the comsats hadn't had solar panels, I definitely would have needed 2 of the photon fuel cell modules I developed last night.  I might use them on the Hubble mission as a demonstrator of the technology.  I think there's real mileage in that little sub-assembly, so I might also develop it further.

Onward to the next mission in this great challenge set, and thanks Inigma for the payload once again!

Hi FCISuperGuy.  Erm, back again, this set of challenges has really got a hold of me, and loving road testing the Buran's capabilities!  This time I've completed STS-3 with the rank (should you pass my mission) of STS Commander - Rank 3.  This was a relatively easy mission compared to the Comsat mission, although there was certainly difficulty in gauging a good re-entry profile from a 26.19 degree inclination and 691km orbit.  Building the Kubble on orbit was a great mission, and credit to @xoknight for the payload, it really is a stunning bit of kit!

Here's the mission report and proof for your perusal:

STS 4-6 comes next, so I'm really going to work in improving my own space station modules, and see if I can mimic the usability and incredible detail of Inigma and xoknight's modules, in the hope of becoming "Architect" like them.

Until next challenge entry...

Nice! Soon I'm going to run out of badges...This makes you the first person to reach the rank of STS Commander Rank 3! Collect your badge here:

Besides working on the Skunkworks badge, I'm also making an 'STS Challenge Certified' badge for shuttles who complete all missions of the challenge and are released on the Spacecraft Exchange.

Awesome the Hubble challenge was superb, although not for the processor-ly challenged (I am one of the lucky ones)!  I'm looking into STS 4-7 tonight, but will be totally overhauling my space station modules so may not get round to posting it until tomorrow or Sunday.  The STS Challenge Certified badge is definitely something that I am interested in achieving.  I can't lend a hand with designs unfortunately, as while I can design a craft, I cannot design a badge for hit...

Well, I wanted to do something different. I like smaller craft, and when I build shuttles, I tend to use the main engines as the OMS itself so as to increase efficiency (less useless weight). But the challenge mandated dual OMS, so I went and made an ion version, the I shuttle. It will carry 6 kerbals to orbit and a small payload. It has its quirks, but is very interesting in my opinion, and flies really well when coming back. It also has its launch engines in line with CoM, so the angular losses are very low.

Big album ahead: http://imgur.com/a/EVPlp

Edit: Thanks Mullet

How do I embed?

That's very cool!  To embed an album copy the jumble of letter after the last slash in the link (in your imgur album's case EVPlp) then click on the "i" in the post editor here (top right icon) and paste the jumble of letters in.  Hey presto you are gtg!

I don't know if it counts as a real STS, it is not the usual piggyback config, but I post this anyways as per definition it does the trick. I accelerated the vid because the mission was 46 min originally, but all the necessary proofs are inside, at least I hope. Reached a 801 km orbit and placed the standard 42t fuel pod there, then landed on the runway in one piece. I used the little turbojets because I am a terrible pilot, and the craft tended to lose all of its speed several hundred meters short of the runway's end.

Your basic badge attempt. I was honest and kept all the early marks in there. Not all of them "flew", exactly.:

The saga of Fatback-1 (technically, Fatback-3)

No wonder the Russians couldn't figure out why the States built this bloody thing.

Glad you enjoyed it, Mullet :)

A tip from someone with some experience building shuttles: Get RCS Build Aid. And put the external tank as far forward as you can

Ya know...

GAP Dev update, relevant to STS Challenges:

Bug Test Weekend for sure. Lots of Contract Configurator stuff, hardly got to working on advancing development of GAP this weekend, although what little time I did have to work on GAP, my 8 year old son insisted I create an STS contract. Yes, an STS contract. Accept the STS-1 contract, and you get an immediate copy of my awesome space shuttle (see my sig link) copied directly to your VAB for immediate use on the STS-1 mission. A hefty starting cost for sure, but the advance makes it worth your while, assuming you can lift the 42 ton STS-Fuel Pod depot into 100km orbit or higher, and return to KSC runway without dying. :D

fvbMjg2.pngYyrqSKI.png

this will serve as a teaser for GAP 3.0 - whenever that far future version is rolled out.

For now, I'm working on releasing 0.3 of GAP which will have this STS-1 teaser.

...more to come!

See link to GAP in my sig below for more on this contract pack I'm developing (hence the reason I handed off the forum STS challenges to FCS). :)

Speaking of... hey FCS, do you need the original STS logo pdn so you can modify it if desired? That way you can make additional badges for other classes if desired. Link to the pdn here:

I used paint.net to make the original badges. The font used is Calibri.

First off, it's FCI :) Anyway, thanks for the original logo! I'll need it...

@Gojira1000 Unfortunately, it seems that the SRBs that you used weren't stock. Therefore, you unfortunately don't qualify for STS Engineer - you can, however, get the Mission Specialist badge for successfully launching a modded shuttle.

@ABalazs According to the resource panel shown in the video, it seems that you used the fuel in the fuel pod. Could you confirm this?

Woops - You're right, those are KW Rocketry boosters - well, I'm still happy with Mission Specialist :)

I don't think so. If you observe it, you will see I used stage only view during the flight to check my fuel level. The plane contains 4x400 unit of LF in the wing root fuel tank system, and that is the only fuel the nuke engines are connected with. I will check at home, but I don't think there is any fuel route between the pod and the engines. And as you can see, I did not use fuel transfer during the flight. I have no intention to cheat here, you know.

Oops... Sorry! I must've missed your submissions under all the other ones. Quite a unique idea, using ion engines - hopefully this won't be too limiting on range. As per the rules, you hereby receive the STS Commander Rank 4 badge! Congratulations, and I hope you can prove your shuttle even more with the other challenges.

Ok, I checked the pod in the game, still on its orbit, and it is full. But if you request it, I can do the flight again.

Okay. Could you please post a picture of the fuel pod in orbit with the resource panel open, just for confirmation? Thanks!

I could, but I will not. You publicly suspected me of cheating, and a picture like that couldn't wash my name clean. Maybe I just hyperedited that pod to orbit. I will probably fly the mission again some time, when I will be in a mood to make myself humiliated again. That time, I will present all the proofs needed, incuding the pod's fuel load, but I will not, ever, wear any of this challenge's badges in my sig, even the one i earned already. GG mate.

Prove my shuttle with more challenges? I did this one because it's the only one a small shuttle is capable of, and it was quite fun actually. It's not like you can send an orange tank to orbit with a Mk2 shuttle. Or can you?

Hmmmmm.......this gave me an idea

I was simply confirming your entry's validity, nothing more. I didn't and don't suspect you of cheating at all - I hold all entries up to the same standards, which are the ones in the main post. All entries go through the same checks. Also, in case you decided to actually hyperedit it up to orbit, I would be able to tell by cross-checking the orbit in the picture with the orbit shown in the video you posted. I can't stop you from feeling humiliated and deciding never to wear an STS badge, but I can assure you that I do not suspect you of cheating and do not mean to 'humiliate' you in any way. Other challenges and their maintainers do exactly the same thing.

Challenge accepted! You could actually make a mini-station with your shuttle... Wish you luck!
