The Manley Challenges: Episode 1

Welcome to the Manley Challenges Episode 1 : Repatriating Dead Kerbals

The Manley challenges were created in order to find out if there existed in any shape or form skill that could possibly rival that of the renowned KSP youtube Scott Manley. It is also a direct challenge to Scott's skill.

The challenges attempt to test your:

Ingenuity(spacecraft design)

Piloting Skill

Patience

The challenge is to land a 3 seater command pod at the old airfield, somehow kill the kerbals inside and pick it up using a clamp-o-tron grabbing unit and bring it to Duna. Drop the command pod along with a base of at least one kerbal and a means of generating power. Then send the rest of the ship home and land it on the Vehicle Assembly Building. Episode 2 will be posted as soon as possible.

This challenge is also an attempt to honour all of the brave Kerbals that have been killed by our stupidity.

Firstly pictures of the empty command pod at the Old Airfield.

1) Your vehicle picking up the command pod. 2) Vehicle Launching 3) Vehicle above 70km 4) Vehicle in orbit 5) Vehicle in Kerbol Orbit 6) Rendezvous with Duna 7) Duna Orbit 8) Entering Duna's atmosphere 9) Duna Landing 10) Dropping the command pod and base 11) Launch of return vessel 12) Duna Orbit 13) Kerbol orbit 14) Kerbin Orbit 15) Re-entering Kerbin's atmosphere 16) Landing on the Vehicle Assembly Building 17) Anything else you would like

This challenge is meant to be extremely hard

Isn't the Island Airfield command pod a solid prop, like the VAB or every other thing on the surface of Kerbin (that you the player didn't put there)?

Indeed. As far as I know that pod is part of the scenery. You might be able to destroy it (I've never tried) like the buildings at KSC but I am pretty sure you can not pick it up.

@bobmac Please check the Challenge Submission Guide and show us your attempt. Proof that it can be done and you'll get a lot more response.

Confirmed - it can't be picked up.

Only way I can see this working is if you put another pod out there to pick up as the burnt out one is not a moveable object.

I should also point out that Scott Manley is not the "be all and end all" of KSP skill. There are plenty of people around this forum who are more adept at this game than he is. He's an excellent presenter and we're thankful to have his videos as a resource for new players, but his KSP skillz are not the best out there.

I think there is some misunderstanding going on here, he clearly states that you have to land a 3 seat command pod AT the old airfield. As in ANY 3 seat command pod.

He isn't talking about picking up the command pod that is sitting inside the building, at least not as far as I can tell?

The OP updated the challenge after it was pointed out that the old pod could not be picked up.

He's not talking about that any more. Before bobmac edited the OP he wanted you to pick up the old rusty pod from the hangar.

I could do this, but I so don't feel like it.

In any case, this challenge seems like a good idea at first, but unfortunately Scott Manley holds a revered position in this community as the Best - surely you get the gist given the image in the OP. So the inevitable conclusion of this challenge is either that everyone will give up because it's either too hard or because they don't want to dishonor Scott Manley... or that someone will actually win, and everyone will argue over whether he or she is better than Scott Manley or the challenge was too easy. And after that, either the thread will be locked or the challenge will be made harder, bringing us back to the aforementioned "everyone gives up" conclusion.
I acknowledge and respect your ambition (I too want to see Manley challenged for his throne), but be careful and try not to expect too much!
