Dakar 2016 is coming up and as a fan I like to design a manned rover that is up for a offroad challenge.

Is there a way to set up a track on Kerbin ?

Can I spawn a car there and time the race ?

Is this possible ?

(Edit: wheel parts are tweaked)

Wow, awesome buggy, I like the working wing, didn't think of that :o

I'm thinking of Tuning your wheel parts, making it go faster and giving it better steering.

My "buggy" goes 85 m/s (306 kph), but I have to tune the steering, it keeps biting dust....:D

We still need a track...

In the old forums there was a challenge called the Dakar Kerbin Challenge.... If I can dig it up on these forums I will see if I can link it here.

It was to drive from KSC to Old KSC.   I remember doing it in around 6 and a half hours, and I took a short cut because my vehicle was amphibious.

EDIT- Found it my search foo is good.

You could set up flags or probe cores as markers, and then share the save file so others can try the same course. Then maybe we could get a leaderboard going of people's times

That sounds great, I will look into that and get back soon.

I am still playing with this, thanks to SpaceplaneAddict wing "tip" (pun ^_^) this buggy can ride and steer at speeds over 100 m/s, but still is very vulnerable for heavy impact after jumps.

Craft file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lgqx987gqv2erim/Buggy%20II.craft?dl=0

*CFG files for the wheels are edited to do this*

roverWheelM1.cfg :

}
        steeringCurve
        {
            key = 0 25
            key = 10 9
            key = 30 2
        }
        torqueCurve
        {
            key = 0 500 0 50
            key = 200  100 50
            key = 300 14 0 50
            key = 340 0 0 50
        }

It can even drive fast under water :o

I still need a way to set up a track and be able to time the run...suggestions anyone ?

For those who are still interested, I've kept on tuning and the results are amazing.

The new version can steer and jump driving over 120 m/s ! (I'm thinking of making a video if anybody would like to see that)

I also climbed the K2 just driving almost verticaly to the top !

Altough I altered the config files, don't think it is unbreakable, driving at high speeds is still a challenge :cool:

Driving up the mountain.

On top of K2.

Left; the "Grasshopper".    Right; the upgrade "Hornet"

wHJwQbx.png

Gave the bottom more clearance and stanced the wheels.

A pair of disco lights could not be avoided....

I still need a way to spawn cars anywhere on Kerbin and timer gates for a Dakar challenge, suggestions are very,very welcome.

Can you modify a config for the offroad-style wheels? The ones on my Mercenary?

Also, I think you can use Hyperedit to land yourself at any specific place, if you have the coordinates.

Thanks for the Hyperedit tip, I will look into that.

I will tweak your buggy if you like, sounds like fun.

Awesoe if you could! Would make an interesting and super fast Elcano....

Use my wheels if you like https://www.dropbox.com/s/pldyzyf2dwiiuk6/roverWheelM1.cfg?dl=0

Copy it here : Kerbal Space Program/GameData/Squad/Parts/Wheel/roverWheelM1 *this will overwrite your original wheel replacing it with a little Red Bull Power :sticktongue:

Edit: And don't forget to place a wing (and reverse it), thanks to you my buggy has a wing for downforce and can handle top speeds !

Having wheels like that is a bit OP, there arent tires on Earth now that can withstand that kind of abuse in an off-road version.   I think the best part of a challange is if there is an element of failure, with stock tires and wheels, if you break them you can fix them, but it takes time.   Just like the real Dakar Rally, tires blow, axles break, they take time to fix.

Luckely this is Kerbin, not Earth...:D

Altough my wheels are fast, my car can still flip over, break and explode if you are not driving it with caution.

You are still right about using stock wheels, but driving a Dakar challenge 21 m/s top is never gonna be a challenge.....:(

Try increasing the max speed to a realistic 45-50m/s instead of the aircraft cruising speeds.

Yes, good idea, 50 m/s  = 180 kph.

Still busy with building buggys, trying to go smaller....

raS9KR8.png

And yes, this lill' thing can do speeds higher then 100 m/s :sticktongue:
