Lemmy Kilmister, you will be missed!

I was saddened to hear this morning Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister has passed away.

I first saw Motorhead when I was in the Army stationed in Germany. I was absolutely blown away by their raw power.  No fancy lights or stage show, no costumes or makeup, they just came out and played hard.... so very hard!

I would argue every heavy metal band today owes their existence to Motorhead, and I hope they appreciate what Lemmy did when he started that band.  He didn't just play music, he inspired thousands, and practically invented Metal.

You will be missed....

Yeah, I came to work in a Mötorhead t-shirt today.

But then again, "that's the way I like it baby - I don't want to live forever" ;) wise words from the man himself, right?

Went to their show only once. Great experience. Guy lived fast and, honestly, a lot longer than expected from his lifestyle, as I'm sure he'd admit himself. Yeah, he'll be remembered.

Been thinking.. Lemmy wasn't much of a 'rest' or 'peace' kind of guy, was he?

I suggest the thread topic be changed from 'R.I.P Lemmy Kilmister' to 'Killed by Death: Lemmy Kilmister', or something like that.

Just saw a guy on a Motörhead t-shirt on my way to work from lunch. Exchanged horns from distance. Nice feeling of community.

You're probably right..... I think wherever he is now, there's quite a party going on.

I'll change the title

Saw Lemmy  and  Motörhead play at Ozzfest in 1998 in Sommerset Wisconsin.  Phenomenal show.

Agreed.  I had heard Motörhead before via CD/Cassette Tape (IKR, how old!) but that Ozzfest was the first time I'd ever seen them live.  So powerful with no BS frills or facepaints.

Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath (and solo artist) fame, along with Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day) both point to Lemmy as inspirations in their music, as well as (in Ozzy's case) close friends.  It's a shame that Motörhead has not been recognized in the same manner both these bands have been (R&R Hall of Fame), they (and Lemmy by proxy) are equally worthy if not moreso.  I'm sure there are also many, many more examples of bands who'd consider their music directly influenced by Lemmy.  Megadeth, Metallica (though the latter'd never admit it) and even many hard rock/metal bands of today owe at least some of their fame to what Motörhead did.

fenriz of darkthrone also credits motorhead as a major inspiration to the development of black and death metal. in fact i got into motorhead because so many other bands i liked considered them a huge influence, and now most of the music i listen to is motorhead.

If there is a heaven, then that place just got a whole lot louder.

"Hey, Gabriel, lemmy that lute!"

RIP

There was a great tribute song way back when:

"If you believe in Heaven,
You know they got a hell of a band"

I do believe that band just got a lot more metal in the last couple days...
