IMHO they need to go ahead and scrap the "fairings" they have now and just make procedural fairings stock. PF is easier, more intuitive, friendlier and duplicatable every single time you need to adjust the payload. Stock is NONE OF THESE THINGS.

Both are useful. Even though I prefer PF and use them more, there are some designs where the stock fairings are just better. For example for an inline fairing in a design where you can't have a fairing base ring in the middle (because of mass or crossfeed), then using KSP's fairings is easier.

@Gaarst Check this out:  The top is a payload that went to Eve. The line <you MAY need to zoom in to see it> that breaks up that LONG fairing is where the payload detatches with its OWN fairing and heat shield for Eve Entry. I messed up and left out a decoupler lol, but, if you look carefully the bulk of the long fairing stack stems from a interstage fairing base which has been sized for this ship via its tweakable settings.

Can you elaborate, or point me to somewhere where you have elaborated?  Are you suggesting that all (sensible) parts have the ability to "create fairing" without the need for a base?  Because that sounds rather nifty done correctly!

Interested in you expanding on this idea I have to say!

The reliance on a base for a fairing negates the useful manipulation of them. It is restrictive, inelegant. Why can't a fairing be applied to a space? It would require an invisible part perhaps. You could make any fairing in use today. YOu should be able to change every aspect of them. Size, shape, colour, number of leafs ect.
