Air Speed Record Challenge (No Cheats)

Recommended Posts

This challenge is called the Air Speed Record, you build the fastest stock aircraft you can and put your submission in the comments below through video or screenshot. Video is preferred over screenshot

It's pretty straight forward however there are some rules to make sure this challenge is fair for everyone!

Rules

  1. No rocket engines of any sort with the exception of rapier engines!
  2. No SRB's (Solid rocket boosters)!
  3. NO cheats!
  4. It must all be stock (no mods)!
  5. You may not use more than 8 engines.
  6. You may not go above 30,000 meters.
  7. It all must be in one stage, no seperatrons, decouplers, etc.
  8. It must be on Kerbin.
  9. It must be manned (No drones).
  10. Submissions are taken through screenshots and video but video is much more appreciated.
  11. It must take off from the runway.
  12. Have fun, and don't get discouraged.
  13. It must be a plane, not a rocket with a bunch of jet engines attached.
  14. This must be in KSP version 1.0.5 or later!
  15. Provide aircraft name!

Down here is the leaderboard where the current record holder's are displayed.

Leaderboard

  1. Radieur Ng - 3056 M/S "Pointy McGoFast"
  2. JW2016 - 3276 M/S "JW2016-02-17"
  3. Potatto 2729 M/S "Speed-O-Bust"
  4. Spudrotuskutarsu - 2628 M/S "DS X1 Shooting Star"
  5. Triop - 2493 M/S
  6. Chocolat Oreos - 2100 M/S "The Swifty Monster"
  7. evader - 2082 M/S "liquid fuel only production mkII
  8. prorokbmx - 1873 M/S
  9. AquaAlmond - 1778 M/S "SB-3 Peregrine"
  10. Gojira1000 - 1690 M/S "x-2"

My Submission

The plane is called the SB-3 Peregrine the third plane in the SB series, named after the Peregrine Falcon the world's fastest bird. It reaches a top speed of 1778 M/S in this video.

Recommended Recording Software

  1. OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) Free, no watermark, customizable recording settings.
  2. Fraps (Good quality recording software, but costs money, wouldn't buy it for this challenge if you don't already have it.)
  3. Bandicam Trial (Free, good quality video but there is a watermark)

Recommended Editing Software

Obviously you don't need to edit the video but it will make the quality of the video better.

  1. Lightworks (Free video editing software with lots of features, but it can take a while to learn to use. Option to upgrade, upgrade provides more features)
  2. Windows Movie Maker / iMovie (Depending on what OS you have this will be included, free, simple, easy to use but don't expect much out of it)

Once again don't get discouraged and have fun and make sure to follow the rules

My entry is the Hydra Mk.ii, top speed 2,899 m/s with a max altitude of 25,410.  I hope screenshots are OK: I did my best to document the flight, from takeoff to...obliteration.

Was max temp cheat on?

Because your eight engines would break Bob's radar gun - he'd be unable to clock you...

I'm going to try it anyway, whether I qualify for this or not... I want to see how fast it will go before it blows apart.

(15 minutes later)

OK, I just tried it, and she made it to almost 1,600 m/s at 25km before the cockpit overheated and blew up... not so fast, but fun to watch!  hehe

Eh, why not I'll change it to 8 engines. I have no idea why I put that rule in the first place...  I changed rules so I had to clear the leaderboard, your now first place.

I didn't realize you could turn max. temp off.  Without it I don't know how fast she'll go.
But over-heating is part of the game, so doesn't turning it off kind of defeat the purpose of this challenge?

Yeah, because nothing is as funny as watching Bob's face as his ship burns and shatters around him!

yeah....  ouch.

But seriously, one of the major factors in a speed record challenge would be overheating. So turning it off seems to me like massively cheating.
And it makes me wonder just how fast, or not so fast, the two planes already on the leaderboard can really go before the heat gets to them.

I'm not gonna lie, if I had paid attention and caught the line about turning the heating off, I wouldn't have joined in, sorry.

Good point. Last night I was playing around with a craft design that basically was nothing more than an over-sized bottle rocket with a command pod and wings. Took off like a champ, and somewhere near 1,570km/s, the unthinkable happened - the command pod blew itself apart.  My daughter and I laughed so hard about it until we both had tears coming out of our eyes; but then we had  a more serious conversation about physics and convection heating - and she is only 5! It ended with her and I going back to the SPH and designing another one. Dang bed time caught up with us, but it can be done another day...

That's right about where my cockpit blew, just under 1600.  I'm not sure exactly, but I hit F3 and took a screenshot, so I can go check later.

More important, I think it's fantastic you're doing this with your daughter!!!  What a fun way to teach her a little physics!  :D

I thought about it for a while and your right I'll change it.

OK, I'm in the middle of writing a new chapter for my fan-fiction story, trying to get it done before I have to leave for the evening.

But I'll re-do this challenge tomorrow, and take some better screenshots of the whole thing.

Ok, good to hear and thanks for the recommendation on max temp cheats.
