Awful, sorry to hear that...

As a last resort, you can still try Recuva. There is a free version.

Whatever happens, don't download or write anything on your hard drive. Just download the file on a USB key (or another hard drive if you have any), run it from here. Maybe you can even find a portable version that's already decompressed from the installation file... Just work from a USB key and try to scan for your "default" career folder for any deleted file, you may be able to recover something.

I had a similar experience some time (year) ago.

Since then I have a script that backs up my various 'saves' directories to a 'timedate-version'-named directory on my server every time I shut my gaming rig down.

(There's a compressing and pruning of old crud running on the server every early morning so I don't even have to bother about disk space )

I found a backup of ksp 1.0.5 just before I enter 1.1 prerelease and it has my ksp savefile (2 weeks ago)

those are stored in the same directory as the sfs and are deleted if you create a new save with the same name.
