Obviously, Kerbals are a clone worker race specially engineered for the rigors of space travel.

Engineered by who is the real question.

Well, according to Kerbal legend the engineer in question is called the 'Harvester', as it was he who sowed the first seeds of the Kerbal race and harvested the first generation.

I know for a fact that they infest a host with a parasitic larva that bursts out of the host's chest early in development and goes on to form an adult Kerbal. When I tried to get this represented in the game, the thread got locked.

Some "facts*" about Kerbals:

75% of their mass is in their heads.

They have no fingers - just a thumb and a flappy bit, like a flipper.

Their bones are cartilaginous, like in a shark.

Kerbal eyes aren't spherical, nor are they in a socket. They're just bubbles of transparent skin with the flexible, movable eye assembly underneath, like in jumping spiders.

In an emergency Kerbals can survive on liquid fuel, but only if they then chase it with oxidizer.

Kerbals use the same word to mean "snacks" and "life support".

I thought they were over grown bacteria or maybe super evolved viruses.  I once read a fun sci-fi book about a race that evolved from viruses and developed technology and space travel (wish I could remember the name).
