Can't asparagus any more?

Recommended Posts

I used to asparagus stage quite frequently, but then kind of got away from it, (trying to be more realistic). However recently, attempted to build a lifter with asparagus staging. Now I can't do it.

In the VAB, one use be able to right click on the radial decouplers in the staging icons individually and drag them down to the selected spot. Now it doesn't work. I only end up dragging the whole gang (down or up) not being able to separate them. Something has obviously been changed.

Any help appreciated.

BTW, I am playing 1.1.2 vanilla.

What LameLefty said. You can also build one of your pairs, get it all set, and then copy that radial decoupler and put it onto the central stack.

I've not tried it in the VAB, but in flight if you fiddle around with clicking, right clicking, and holding alt you can separate things in the staging system. It's clunky enough that I've not bothered but I did notice it. If that works in the VAB it'd work here for you, but setting the whole thing up from the get-go with separated staging is far easier.

The way that the UI works to split symmetry groups has changed but it is still possible to do it in the VAB.  It's a bit of a pain to describe, probably easier to just play around with a central fuel tank and 6x symmetrical radial decouplers until you figure out how it now works.  I think the main issue is that when you click to expand the group and then click on a member it just deselects that member leaving the others selected, if you then click on it again to select just that one then it just selects it again.  So, you simply need to click to expand the group, then click on all the parts you don't want to move leaving just those you do and then drag one of the still selected ones...

If you're doing sets of two, just build with 2x radial symmetry, with each set in a separate stage.

I'm doing 4x symmetry, however I will try your suggestion. Thanks for the input.

Do 2x symmetry as your first set of boosters, cross-feeding into the core stage. Do another 2x symmetry 90 degrees around as your second set of boosters, cross-feeding into the first set of boosters.

Okay 5th, doing this in flight might be a little sketchy for me (and my piloting skills) but I may try this anyways. BTW, I can ace just about any probe contract due learning from your tutorial. thanks

Ding Ding Ding Ding!   It took me a while to understand what you were saying, but after messing around in sand box, it finally sank in!  Thanks again for the great advice.

Yes, they changed (i.e. completely inverted) the way selecting-part-of-a-symmetry group works in 1.1.

It used to be that you select the ones you want to split off, and then drag them to a different stage.

Now you select the ones you want to split off, and then drag everything else to a different stage.

It still works... but if you've got a few years of KSP muscle memory telling you to do it the other way, it can get extremely confusing until you finally figure out the new way.  (Re-training your muscle memory can take even longer...)
