Kerbol Prime
I just checked the KGSS maps ... ~3257 metres is the highest peak and when I say approx, that means fly at 3500 or 3300 if you\'re nuts, which Jeb is of course - nuts.Nah, Jeb would go for 3258 metres! That daredevil.
700NitroXpress
Traveling at such a low orbit isn't ideal if you want to land though. 3k minimum around the equator.
Taki117
I never go less than 10K for fear of hitting anything. It also provides plenty of altitude for performing a landing maneuver.
Vanamonde
Sometimes craft left in very low orbits up and vanish while you are personally operating a different ship, even if the orbit is higher than the highest point on the world. I haven't seen this happen for a few versions now; perhaps it's been fixed. But I never leave anything I care about parked below 10,000m anymore. nismobg
I have a scan sat i dont need at 6km ecuatorial , its been there for days and if you want to go under 6km there is ridge from one of the big craters that you have to bypass somehow. Pretty sure it reaches over 5km

Version 0.22 still having those 2.5km vanish issues. (Non-atmospheric). Happened to me just yesterday, Minmus Master EVA Challenge mission. Der Kosmos
Agree. I'll always set it to 15km due to my lander are "slow" to slow-down. Made room for some error.I've found 8km seems to be a good distance. It's high enough to miss mountains but low enough to get a good view of surface features and minimize gravity gains while landing. Csar
Totally didn't realize there were more pages to this post, my probe crashed into mountains at 4.5k orbit It wasn't equatorial though, so YMMV.
Johnno
After every update that changes surface heights there's always several new threads discussing it. This one however is originally from 2012, so not exactly current.Thread closed.
