Failed MiG-9 replica becomes an insanely maneuverable plane

Recommended Posts

(BTW, this is my first thread in this section! just sayin')

At one point, I got crazy making replicas in KSP, and at one point in that time, I moved to make the russian thingies. One of them was this. A failed replica that doesn't really look like the real one. If it weren't such an unusual plane, I would delete it and probably make a new one, but after a while of flight testing, I noticed that despite being stable (At typical airspeeds, its CoL is enough far behind CoM that it doesn't do a Pugachev's Cobra at typical airspeeds and atmospheric pressures when you fully engage the controls), and not even being a canard design, it is insanely maneuverable - More maneuverable than even the legendary Aeris 3A! The design is really very simple - a cockpit, nosecone, 2 small turbojets, simple wings and tail section. Speaking of the tail section, it is easy to loose the tail when buzzing close to buildings, and it is fairly stable after losing the tail. It does flip a bit without SAS (after losing tail), but as long as you don't do yaw heavy manuevers and use SAS, it's enough for an emergency landing. Here's some screenshots, and the craft file:

Funny you bring up the MiG-9. I finally learned the basics of flying with Ferram Aerospace Research in something like that, thanks to Veeltch.

This craft didn't even need a tail rudder, just a tail fin. The reaction wheels in the inline Mk1 cockpit give enough torque for yaw authority. Of course the real thing doesn't have that

See if this craft file (96 KB) is any use. There's FAR-specific things in it though.
