Welcome to the Modern fighter challenge

The challenge:

Jeb has asked for a new fighter aircraft but he had a few requests

1: Must be able to fly to 20,000

2: Must use the Whiplash Jet engine.

3: Must be able to take of vertically (Can use other engines for this)

The Player with the fastest speed will win (You can Do dives)

Also post a screenshot of take off, landing, Your highest attitude, Flight results screen, NO DEBUGMENU,  SCREENSHOT PROOF

Stock KSP

Winner So far: TheEpicSquared

Considering Kerbin is roughly 1/3rd the size of Earth...

20km is a little under 1/3rd of the way to space.  So about 60km equivalent on Earth.

I am not sure what Modern fighter, flies at 190kft but I doubt there is one.

A military plane flying that high would be more of an interceptor than a fighter.

I imagine it's primary use would be taking down high altitude bombers, not dueling with other planes.

Still, this is KSP not the real world, so if that's how he wants to make his challenge, I don't see any technical problem with it.

Modern military jet fighters do not require VTOL, top speeds exceeding the enemies, or a limit to their altitude that is above average (In KSP it would be about 16,000m to match the most modern fighters, Su-50, and F-22).

So the rules would be more accurate as:

Supermaneuverability.

Stealth.

Supercruise (above mach 1 flight for extended periods of time, and long range capabilities).

Weapon bays inside the aircraft.

Fly by wire control systems.

Cruising speed of mach 1.4 or higher.

I feel that you should change the requirement for engines to be panthers if you're talking about fighter aircraft.

In BDA air to air combat, most fighters use panther engines not only because of maneuverability, weight, and low-altitude fuel efficiency, but also because whiplash engines are very easy for heat-seeking missiles to track.

Whiplashes not only have a much greater lock-on range, they're also much harder to break missile locks with. It is possible to break the lock of a heat-seeking missile with only 2 flares with panthers, but you need several times the amount of flares if your plane has whiplashes, since they can't get rid of their shock diamonds. Yes, you can reduce the heat signature by turning the engine off, but then that basically makes a fighter immobile, which offsets that.

Guys, it is a KSP challenge. Kerbals are bonkers, if they want to fight with Whiplash equiped fighters, then they will. Regardless of how effective these engines are.

I'll be the first to make an entry, with the A6 Eagle VTOL MKII. It struggled a bit to get to 20 km (I usually fly it at 18-19 km), but it got there eventually. Max speed and altitude: 1051 @ 20017 m

It is also heavier than necessary, since I have other uses for this aircraft other than purely for this challenge. So this aircraft should be beatable.

Edit: I might lighten it up and adapt it for this challenge later on, should this aircraft be challenged.

  • 1 month later...

My entry is an F-15 Tomcat with one time VTOL capability (using 4 duct taped jet engines, which were cut off after lift off).

A few days ago, I had made an SR-71 Blackbird that was capable of attaining the speeds and altitude necessary for this challenge, minus the required VTOL, before I knew of the Challenge. So in good Kerbal spirit, I ripped the engines off of that plane, duct taped them to the modified F-15, and here are the results.

Please note that no Kerbals were harmed in the destruction of the runway as the vertical engines fell. Also, if dropping those engines disqualifies my craft, my apologies in advance, and I at least hope my post is entertaining.

At 20,035m, Top speed of 1232.5 m/s was attained.

And after my hop across the pond, I rendezvoused with the SR-71 Blackbird that I flew a few days ago.

I also hope I inserted the images correctly.
