is an Eve SSTO rocket possible?

toying w/ eve lander designs, and it occurs to me:

"If you make an Eve SSTO rocket, do you win this game?"

its supposed to take 8km/s of dV, and if your rocket can do that (and refuel) doesn't that mean it can ANYTHING else in this game?

Such a rocketship would easily take it self to LKO with plenty of fuel to land on Minmus and refuel and then it could go and land ANYWHERE. Do anything, without any help, without a fuel tender, it wouldn't even need gantries, b/c it would have to land on Eve, it would the ultimate KSP rocket!! Am i right?

this begs the question: can it be done with stock parts??

Sadly, no. Not since the aero change. There are only a few engines that work at sea level on Eve, and none of them are capable of producing 8 km/ sec dv.

That's why you don't start at sea level. :P

Anything is possible. It just depends on the number of extra boosters. Someone did a Kerbin SRB SSTO about a week or two ago. They lowered the number of SRBs firing as they got higher. You could probably use the same technique here. I know a lot of people don't think its possible but they just don't have good enough computers to try it. :P

Eve sea-level SSTO is, in fact, outright impossible. Naked tanks don't give enough deltaV, even before you start accounting for things like engines and TWR. SSTOing from a mountaintop, like @astrobond did, is only just within the reach of possibility; it needs roughly ~5500m/s of high TWR thrust, which a Mammoth or Vector can manage.

Hmm how about a VSSTO?

A vertical SSTO. Ask @NSEP. He specializes in them. :P

Eve's gravity functionally necessitates a horizontal launch for a SSTO. That way you can build speed while your craft gets lighter and launch with a TWR < 1; going vertical requires higher TWRs, which sink any chance of getting the deltaV you need.

Hmmmmmmm.................. How about mounting fuselages plus mammoths on @astrobond's SSTO? This would increase your chance of getting to orbit from Eve.

No, it wouldn't. He's basically got that pruned as far as it'll go. Adding more stacks just gets you back to where you started. It might be possible to shave some weight -- using less wing, perhaps -- but I wouldn't care to try.
