Well, for staters, I think this thread would be better off in General Discussion, and the mods may too, so don't be surprised if it gets moved.

Second point: What's the cutoff point for the resource scans there? Take it as high as you can before they all disappear, then roll it back one click. Whichever is the larger patch is the one you'd aim for, all else being equal.

Honestly, you'd need to look at the slopes there. If it's really hilly and steep at one, you'd want to go to the other. So punt a SAR sat out there and take a good hard look to see what's there.

North Pole is super evil. South Pole is slightly less evil, but still really evil. Polar terrain is really crazy almost everywhere, and plus it has a tendency to murder Kerbals who stand right on top of the poles.

Maybe make your base mobile. Mobility is useful. Plus then you can get resources from everywhere, not just one spot. You can use Kerbal Planetary Base Systems and make a really big rover. Use the base parts to store stuff and to have the crew modules. Add some science and resource scanners. If you also want to refuel other ships, use surface docking or KAS. If you make a stationary base, USE LEGS!!! Otherwise it will slide around and explode.

Is this a challenge? If it's a challenge, then you should add rules and stuff. Or maybe you should ask to have it moved.

Sensible mode: Pick the furtherst spot from either pole that has enough water.

Fun mode: Design a ball-shaped base that doesn't care about terrain undulations.

Isn't it legs that slide around and explode almost by definition in 1.1.x? I always land stuff on various structural trusses and struts from mods both due to the wheel/leg horror stories and because I want them to be the exact size and shape I desire. If I need them to retract or fold I can use Infernal Robotics. (◡‿◡✿)

I've taken a rover to the south pole once.  At one point I saved because the terrain seemed dangerous, and then found out I could not advance further without blowing up.    I planted a flag to name the location "Suicide Point"

It's madness to make a base there.   and I wish you luck =)
