SLS color scheme

"Well, you're obviously being totally naive of course", said the girl, "When you've been in marketing as long as I have, you'll know that before any new product can be developed it has to be properly researched. We’ve got to find out what people want from fire, how they relate to it, what sort of image it has for them."
The crowd were tense. They were expecting something wonderful from Ford.
"Stick it up your nose," he said.
"Which is precisely the sort of thing we need to know," insisted the girl, "Do people want fire that can be fitted nasally?"
"And the wheel," said the Captain, "What about this wheel thingy? It sounds a terribly interesting project."
"Ah," said the marketing girl, "Well, we're having a little difficulty there."
"Difficulty?" exclaimed Ford. "Difficulty? What do you mean, difficulty? It's the single simplest machine in the entire Universe!"
The marketing girl soured him with a look.
"Alright, Mr. Wiseguy," she said, "if you're so clever, you tell us what colour it should be."

The orange 1st stage tank is a throwback to the original Ares V design concept which initially used an extended version of the space shuttle external fuel tank for it's first stage (and it still might, I am uncertain as to the details). As to the stripes on the boosters, that is purely aesthetic so I've seen.

Oh, I thought I read somewhere it used old tech from it, I guess I'm mistaken. :P

The EDS (Earth Departure Stage) that was to be developped for Ares V and later SLS should have used J-2Xs directly derived from Saturn V's J-2 engines; but Ares was cancelled and the EDS was replaced by the EUS (Exploration Upper Stage) using RL-10s for SLS.

There's no Saturn tech on SLS.

They still don't know which engines to use on the later upper stages, so, it's possible a J-2 descendent could be used.

And, actually, the SSME descends from the HG-3, which descends from the J-2. So, there is *some*.

They picked the RL10 years ago.

Not years ago, last I checked they were still in the decision making process.

Here's Wikipedia:

In April 2016 it was reported NASA has chosen to use a design based on four RL10 engines for the EUS.

That's not years ago, certainly. Months, yes. But I'm not in the habit of checking on SLS related news.

Plus, I was thinking of the Earth Departure Stage, current plans call for development quite a while from now, and the use of J-2 based engines.

There's still a chance they'll slap two LF boosters with 2 F-1B's each on SLS.

The evolution path isn't going to go Block I (90 mT) ---> Block IB (105 mT) ---> Block II (130 mT).

It'll go Block I (90 mT) ---> Block IB (105 mT) ---> Core & EUS with Dark Knight boosters (113 mT) ---> Core & EUS/EDS with New Glenn boosters (190 mT)...
