Memorial for John Glenn

Recommended Posts

Squad could put a Mk I capsule in an orbit around Kerbin matching Glenn's flight path. The inclination and size of space would make it unlikely to be encountered accidentally - it could show up as an anomaly and be a rendezvous target.

The IVA view could have a picture of him, or have a Memorial message written on the pod.

This right here. Preferably with a plaque on board listing his achievements.

Why him? There are dozens more who went to space before and after him - why do american astronauts always need to get the preferential treatment?

Well, t.b.h. Joeri Gagarin and, the others would need to have a fitting place too...

This is a good point, perhaps a memorial wall somewhere symetrical to the Mk1 pod memorial that has the names of notables that have passed.  Neil, Yuri, John, and so forth.  One by the Mk1 pod with Apollo 1's crew, and another one by the SPH with the various shuttle fatalities.

I would also note, Squad kinda opened this potential can of worms with the Armstrong memorial on the Mun.

I think that one is acceptable since this is a game about space flight/exploration, and no matter where humans might go in the future, Armstrong took that first step onto another world.

However, a separate memorial for every astronaut or cosmonaut is a bit much.  I kind of like the idea of a single memorial or small references in the part descriptions, though.

Valid, but I'd contend that by that measure Gagarin needs one since he was first in space - it becomes a question of where to draw the line.

I'd find that appropriate.  Perhaps something at Baikerbanur?  I also wouldn't have a problem with a memorial to all who have lost their lives in pursuit of space flight.

I'd say they should leave off adding any more individual memorials until somebody reaches Mars.

I'm not against paying respects to the brave men and women that went into space and came back, but do we really need a memorial/easter egg for each one of them? I know it's a game about space, but so is Orbiter, Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, Space Engine, Universe Sandbox, etc.

My point is we get flooded every time a well-known astronaut dies. Can we stop this and actually think about them and what great things they achieved for a moment instead of going all "THAT MAN WENT TO SPACE MAKE HIM A VIRTUAL STATUE OR SOMETHING, KSP DEVS!!!".

I think many of you have hit the nail on the head.  I think a memorial for Yuri Gagarin would be quite appropriate since he was first in space and Armstrong for the moon landing.  Additional astronauts would go well on like a big monolith that would count for all fallen astronauts.  As for the argument that there are a lot of games about space, that's true but this game is specifically about spaceflight whereas Elite: Dangerous is sci fi, so it's apples and oranges.  This game in particular would make sense to have memorials in it, but I agree with not flooding it for every single astronaut ever.
