Duna vs Ike Rover?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I sent an unmanned rover to the Duna system, and at one point I tried to aerobrake high in Duna's atmosphere (I really didn't know what to expect with Duna's atmosphere, so I went the safe route and went high) over and over again, but eventually I got onto a collision course with Ike, sure, I could correct my trajectory and carry out the mission as planned, but I realized I could land on Ike instead, yet I'm not sure if I can get more science from Ike or Duna. With all this being said, Which one should I land on?

You can possibly get more science from ike due its smaller area=faster to get to new biomes. However, it will cost more fuel if you were intending on using chutes for Duna landing

Thanks! Fuel consumption likely won't be a problem, since I'm not going to be taking off again, though I did bring chutes along for a Duna descent. But faster speed to other biomes doesn't nessarily mean more science, does it? I guess the question now is which has more biomes.

Edit: Which one would you visit if you were found in the scenario?

Duna has more biomes, plus if you have an atmosphere measuring tool and parachutes (extra build cost), you will get to use those on Duna and won't be useless weight.

Duna has a spiritual feel to it. Ike is just dark. A cold rock in space with difficult steep terrain that can mess your rover.

I'd go for Duna. It's like Mars and you have gravity to keep your rover from tipping easily.

Mystik is correct, although I personally love Ike and its view of Duna. While Duna has more biomes, it would take a long time to visit all of them with a rover, whereas ike, while yielding less science would be quicker. Personally, I use the Bon Voyage mod, so I can timewarp and have it rove for me, so I would go Duna. But without the mod I would go Ike

Ike is like Mun, only darker, and *slightly* less harsh. It has fewer biomes than Duna. And it's heavy enough and on orbit low enough that you MUST take encounters with it into account; also eclipses, antenna occlusion, unwanted assists etc. Everything a moon can make wrong Ike will.

It has less biomes than Duna, but being smaller and lower gravity, you can reach them all easier.

Duna, on the other hand... I love it. Visiting all Duna biomes is a mighty trek, although one worth the effort. Definitely get Stock Visual Enhancements if you're going there, because you'll see sights to behold if you decide for the trek. Windy canyons, colorful mists at dusk and dawn, the oppressive darkness of solar eclipse... Screw science, go sightseeing!

I absolutely agree with @mystik and @Sharpy.  I've just completed my visit to Duna in my first 1.2 save and installed SVE halfway through the circumnavigation. It is quite a sight and definitely worth your time!

Speaking of which: the whole trip took me about 3 Kerbin days, so with some physics warp it's not overly time consuming, even in stock. In absolute terms, you'll get more science from Duna since it has 14 opposed to Ike's 8 biomes and both have the same science multiplier (8x).

Ike is a nice destination if you want to set up a refueling operation but other than that...

Moving to Gameplay Questions.

It used to be that Ike had a lot more biomes than Duna, but with the KSP 1.2 biome overhaul, Duna now is the clear winner, hands-down.

^ Strongly second this.  Never ran Scatterer or SVE until recently, when I finally got a graphics card with the horsepower to handle 'em, and Duna's magnificent.  Fell in love with it at first sight... and then just wait until you get your first dust storm on the surface.  Hollywood time.  :)

I'll go for Duna then, thanks! :)
