Don't. Trust me.

(Skip to 2:12 for the gas giant part)

BWAHAHAHAHAHA oh my goodness.. that's insane... So that's what happens when you divide by zero! I love this game.

I always hyper edit my vessels around planets to give them a bug check. Sometimes I messed something up with the PQS mods and when scaled space (the planet you see from orbit) unloads and the height map tries to load, the game freaks out and throws you very quickly away from the planet, forcing you yo restart the game after the issue is fixed.

Problem is, I was 'splashed down' at Olu'um... It doesn't even have an ocean!

Maybe an ocean of liquid hydrogen?

Lore:

NIEBOS

fPUJwQg.jpg

Properties:

  • Gravity ASL: 0.6g
  • Radius: 400,000m
  • Rotation period factor 120000
  • Not tidally locked

History:

Niebos has had a rather peaceful history. During its formation of a molten iron core, the high speeds at which it spun at caused material to fly off the planetoid. Once the intense spinning had begun to subside, more matter clumped together to create the Kerbin-like planet we see today. Its two small moons, Niebietos and Vega, come from the material that threw off during Niebos's formation.

Past Missions

The HVS Victor starship launched 2 decades ago. On Niebos's encounter, the monstrous vessel was struck by an asteroid. Eventually its flight recorder landed somewhere in Niebos's great mountains. Perhaps someone could retrieve it? HVS classed starships carried heavy, powerful flight recorders, solar powered and capable of transmitting messages over thousands of kilometres. Unable to penetrate Niebos's thick atmosphere, the radio waves bounce off the lower layers and land in its vast ranges...

Scorrud is nearly finished. Should I keep working on this moon? It's a tad on the uglier side. Features: Hazardous Ocean (like Niebietos's lava), 3 Volcanoes, 1 of them major (I can't add lava to them, though - that's a game limitation).

2) Then again, Scorch doesn't look too fancy either.

You're in luck! I've taken you feedback on board and done a small change to Scorch. Hopefully it looks more cracked and a tad more realistic.

I meant the stock planet with no visual mods, because if I downloaded EVE, scatterer, or SVE, my computer would explode in a giant supernova.

Hmm I'll take a look without visuals. What do you suggest I do to improve it? (Eg: what is the issue that makes it look 'ehh'?).

I can sort it tomorrow but I need to know what I gotta do :)

The texture quality isn't too good and there's some weird 'ice' thing going on there, even though it's supposed to be very hot.

Localized temperatures can differ. Because of the albedo, the ice sheets may be significantly colder. Ice reflects 75%-95% of all the heat it receives, so...

Ahhhh. The textures are 4k already. I could 'hide' or mask the (blurriness?) by giving Scorch some craters or more cracks. Also, for the snowy peaks, I could make them bare reddish-greyish rock if need be.

However solid calcium melts at over 1000°k and this image of calcium oxide is white. The mountains could be made of calcium

1) You could most likely hide the 'blurriness'.

2) That is true, but you should probably state that in the description of the planet.

Fair enough! I'll add it to the description for Sunday.

As for Asteroids, Olu'um has a few in its accretion disk, but should Niebos get some as well in its rings?

@Gamel0rd1 make the mod the way YOU want to make it. You can't please everyone and trying will most likely result in a finished product you don't like as much. Seeing how often you are being told how YOUR mod should look, breaks my heart a little. I know you just want to please everyone but sometimes you have to just do what you want to do.

If you want a thousand asteroids, put in a thousand asteroids. If you want ice sheets, make ice sheets. If people don't like it, they don't have to download it. You won't see a drop in downloads if what you make is unique and isn't lacking in quality. I can assure you, you won't miss the people that move on.

That's very inspirational and kind of you to post that.

I think the problem I'm having is I am being transparent (posting a lot of 'development' images waaay before release), which leads to people going 'Hey wait a sec - what about this?'.

The issue is I don't particularly want to suddenly turn round and say 'No. Enough.'

I think this started when I released the beta 0.1 version (It had around 5 planets, all quite buggy and what not) when I was just experimenting. Someone suggested a small asteroid moon and I added Niebietos (the small lava one). I think it was a good suggestion and probably mislead me into seeking other people's ideas more than the ones I had myself.

I'm definitely going to take your advice on board because I realise I have quite a few ideas myself. If a planet doesn't look good enough, I will remove it or rework it until it is up to 'standard' with the rest.

That being said, if nobody objects, I've decided to change Scorrud (Volcanic hazardous planet) to something different. I'd still like to adopt a volcanic appearance, but perhaps... I can't find the word at the moment.

Maybe I do try too hard to please everyone. I mean, if they don't like a planet they don't have to visit it at all!

Thanks for the reply. I'll still take suggestions but I may only accept the most impressive or unique ones and shape the planet from there.

Technically Sennim is covered in Mercury and Cyran's 'Hydrogen ocean' is a byproduct of the extreme pressure, but yeah, there is an ocean of Hydrogen.

At the mention of that I can add LqdHydrogen to Cyran's resource pack but not Mercury. HazardousOcean with very modest settings can maybe compensate for the lack of a definition for Mercury.

I actually think you're striking a nice balance here, I quite like your vision thus far. You're having a good time - and achieving good results - with your planet making. Been some good collaboration in discussion also which is productive. There's something to be said for a sanity check too.. questions like "Do you guys think it's too crazy if I do this or that" are viable questions to ask. Sometimes it takes an outside view to make a project the best it can be. But as Galileo says - ultimately it's your mod and you can do whatever you like with it :)
