I think KSP could be the next minecraft

I'm going to out myself as another player of Minecraft, although I'm not active in the community; I just play the game and occasionally join a few private servers associated with other websites I frequent. It's a fun way to kill some time and just do whatever.

While I'm sure the Minecraft community has its own bad examples (as any game with a sizable fanbase is guaranteed to attract just by virtue of Sturgeon's Law), I'm not so sure that people in ours being so quick to judge makes our community look any better.

That said, I don't think KSP should try to become the "next Minecraft" or the next anything else. The game has stood and will stand on its own terms.

Comparing Minecraft and KSP at this point is like comparing apples to oranges. Minecraft is a first-person adventure game. While KSP is a third person omnipotent view simulator game. Trying to compare them is like comparing Metal Gear Solid with Call of Duty. I play both games, so I don't like to see comments that say "minecraft sucks." Well what makes it suck then?

I play Minecraft for awhile, and have played KSP for probably about as long, sans the large involvement in the community of a large MC server (Oh, Terra Novos Tekkit. You were great while you lasted.) and must say that I enjoy KSP more.

1.) The people on these forums, though less in number, share more in common with one another as KSP is a far more focused game in genre than Minecraft, and are generally older than the people on the Minecraft forums.

2.) Minecraft is much more difficult to mod than KSP, which is often as simple as replacing a few .png's and config values to change a part radically.

They're not really all that comparable, besides being popular indie (ish) games.

Yeah. I'm glad KSP wont to that. I want KSP to be popular, but I don't want every immature 12 year old to know about it.

Eh... You just hurt my feelings Nutt, I'm actually 12, and of course, everything seems complicated in the game, but after a while I understood most of it, but even though I can only do simple stuff and the complicated I have to do with MJ, I'm not immature. Not all of we are immature.

I don't understand why someone wouldn't want KSP to become popular. As long as it doesn't affect the development of the game, of course, but I really doubt that Squad would so easily orient themselves more to the "mainstream". As long as the development continues in the right direction, I actually wish that this awesome game becomes as popular as possible because it deserves to be, and the devs deserve that money.

I don't think KSP will reach the popularity of Minecraft, though, simply because it's a very difficult game. An average gamer can be quite good at Minecraft, survive and build wonderful stuff, but he will probably struggle with reaching orbit with a rocket in KSP, not to mention how frustrating would it be for that person to try and fly a quickly assembled spaceplane. But I think that literally everyone interested in space will at least give it a shot.

I don't get what's the big deal with "kids". I think that some 12 y/o might be very mature and intelligent, with interests in science and that kind of stuff, like I was. I myself am 15 y/o, and play MC AND KSP. What I mean to say is that there are many different kinds of people, so don't think that every 5-12 y/o kids plays Angry Birds or CoD(though most might do).

Huzzah for more threads full of irony!

Kerbal Space Program hopefully won't become a buggy game full of half-assed features and broken promises with a lazy dev who constantly takes breaks. From what I can tell, development is back on track, hopefully we won't have to wait another 2+ months for an update again, and most features seem to be indepth and decently done. Plus, most promises have been delivered, so that seems like it's going fine.

This thread had 2 reasons.

One, what similarities do you think KSP has to minecraft, and or, what does KSP beat minecraft in.

Two, do you think it's time for physical KSP merchandise? I sure think so.

I really think KSP could be as popular as minecraft. I think KSP could easily reach 1 million sells by the end 2013.

1. No, not similar at all. Minecraft is a giant lego kit, KSP is a sandbox space simulation.

Notch appears to have stopped caring. He is in it for the money now, pure and simple. I was hoping after making 50 million dollars, he might actually put some work into the product.

KSP beats minecraft in the sense that it uses graphics that are not straight out of 1990.

I love Retro, heck, I lived through the era, but 8bit pixel men are something I played with when I was 5, Im a bit over it now - the cutesy feel has worn off from MC.

2. Yes, I am actually printing out kerbals in 3D and clay because simply, I can't buy any so I need to make my own.

The retro look wasn't going to be the final. He was going to use proper res textures, because the retro grahpics were dev test textures. The hordes of "RETRO IS COOL" kids that flooded minecraft (because they didn't grow up with it, it was cool) wanted Notch to keep it.

Kerbal test merch, at least from what I've heard, will be out by next friday if all goes well.

KSP may not be the next minecraft, but it's forums sure are. It's tough to find a place on here that I'm not at least a little ashamed of.

What do you mean?

I don't expect KSP to be the next "big thing" simply because of the difficulty. When I first saw this and the way it looked, I assumed it was a simple game about flying around in space and building simple rockets. I gave the demo a try and felt it was harder than I initially thought but with practice anyone could master it.

Then after I was convinced to buy the full game, I learned just how wrong I was, and began looking for the formulas and plugging them into Excel, a program I've never used outside of a single class years ago.

The game is deceptively challenging in an amazing way, while Minecraft is extraordinarily simple until you delve into redstone, which becomes more of a hassle later on, at least to me.

_______

Summary: KSP requires thinking. Thinking does not comply with many gamers of today.

I mean that the KSP forums aren't exactly the opposite of the minecraft ones.

That is, until you throw something like mechjeb into the equation.

I'm pretty new...and while I've heard a lot about Mechjeb, I know nothing about it, but from what I've heard, I am sure you're right. So far I want to keep it vanilla.

Uhm, I would have to disagree. This is the near exact opposite of minecraft. Reason being, Minecraft became popular for it's all around simplicity, from graphics to gameplay. Anyone can pick that game up without a prior tutorial, especially now!

As for KSP, it's not simple at all. In fact, you learn basic rocket science off of this game as you play, but most of us rely on others to learn the ins and outs by watching video tutorials or let's plays.

But, does that mean this game won't be a success because you can't really compare it to Minecraft? No, that would be wrong to say. That would be like saying Call of Duty sucks because it's not Minecraft. It makes no sense! The real quest to ask is, will it be as popular? Well, sadly no it won't. Minecraft is stupid simple and the game changing mods just add to the list of things to do.

Now before any of you bash me, I personally don't like Minecraft, it's boring to me and the mods only make the game seem more tedious. I'm only going by the obvious facts. But in the end, we're currently comparing an unfinished product with a complete masterpiece(oddly enough). So who knows? maybe it will pick up a cult following. maybe the future updates in store will catch the attention of many and bring this game to new heights. It won't be Minecraft, but at least it'll stand on it's own merits. A game that can teach players basic rocket science and be fun? That sounds like diamond hit to me!

....get it? Diamond? hehe... heh......

Ok I'll go back to my hole now . _.

((yay for old thread revival? XD))

No, for the simple reason of no MP.

That's what gave Minecraft its viral popularity: sharing your creations with your friends on a communal server. Beyond that it was just a neat semiconductor logic simulator.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of the people who really got into Minecraft will really get into KSP, but it's not going to have the playerbase of MC because it lacks the viral multiplayer aspect.
