The legs have never looked right on this series. They need to be able to withstand “off-nominal” and be ready to fly again.

They like to talk about booster landing like it’s a solved problem but it seems like the legs get pretty trashed on many of the barge landings.

That's because the barge bobs up and down and the height at which F9 cuts its engines differs. It's much less of a problem if the booster or Starship lands on a landing pad on land. IIRC they haven't lost a single booster landing at LZ-1 and LZ-2 (or whatever they are called) and AFAIK those boosters didn't have any leg issues.

CRS-16 failed a landing at LZ-1, though to be fair, that was a hydraulics issue with the grid fins, not the legs.
