AI files are Adobe Illustrator files. They are vector images. You'll need to open them in adobe illustrator, edit them to your liking, and export them as a png or jpg to use them in game.

Well it's a bit more complicated than that. Yes, like Galileo pointed out they are vector graphics files that contain the patches but you can't really use them as flags right away even if you export them as raster images (*.jpg or *.png). KSP expects flags to be 256x160px. If you just put my patches into your flags folder, KSP will stretch them out horribly. You can use free programs like Paint.NET to get the to the appropriate size or again, you can ask me to do that for you.

Here are the pictures from the Iota fly-by mission Alpheus 1. It went smoothly but the extended mission requirements weren't met because of a faulty battery heating element. This caused the space craft to lose power during the transmission of the scientific experiments. It's now a derelict on an escape trajectory out of the Gael system.

Meanwhile, preparations for Alpheus 2 are under way.

It will be another science focused mission to Iota. This time it will actually enter into orbit and do a radio altimeter scan of it's surface much like Ambassador Mk3 did with Gael. We hope to get more clues about Iotas composition and dynamics from these scans. So far the fairly reflective nature of Iota points to either water ice content or minerals in it's surface, both of which come at a surprise to the scientific community. Hopefully subsequent mission will reveal more about this strange world.
