On the theory that Kerbals are sentient tree seeds, I like to name my ships after trees/plants: Apple, Birch, Cottonwood, Dogwood, Evergreen, etc. Gives it a military code name feel...

I've been tending towards really boring names that are practically serial numbers. That said, anything euphonious from your favorite mythology (Greek, Norse, Sumerian, Egyptian, Lovecraftian, etc) should work well.

My current ones are boring. Lander, Lander 2, One-Way Trip, Flying Laser Platform (really), etc. They basically tell what they are. It's nice if you don't want to confuse which ship is which when you save a lot of them.

I'm a boring sod and use a standard for ease.

[Mission name][Crew(crew capacity)][No. LFE in ascent stage(numeral)]

So:

"Mun_Orb-bus 1(4) V"

Is a mission (mun orbit crew transfer), with 1 crew (with max capacity of 4) and 5 engines on the ascent stage.

Mission names are typically equally functional, prefix of the target (Kir_Orb, Mun_Orb, Mun_lander, Min_Orb, Min_lander) then it's purpose (Map, bus, or none if it's testing a launch system or no reason)

("Bus" is my nickname for a vehicle whose purpose is to carry more kerbals back to kerbin than what it launches with)

My thinking has been, if the ship is going to be one of many, give it a simple name that has a deep meaning (Odyssey, Aquarius, Discovery, etc.) and just add a roman numeral for the flight number (Odyssey V, Apollo XI, etc.).

For ships that we think of as one of a kind (not that it's a problem to get them back in KSP) Go with something a little more distinctive (Sword of Orion, The Sterling Marlin, Curiosity's Bolt, StarRanger, etc.)

It's a shame vessel names can't be longer without them being hard to display, as I'd like to see people name their craft the way boats are named, things such as "Drunk and Disorderly" "The Stars or Bust" and stuff like that.

I usually give my ships Military style names like MLV-3 (Munar Launch Vehicle) or LOV (Light Orbital Vehicle). Though recently I've been trying to create better names.
