Air Superiority Fighter Competition

Recommended Posts

Alright, and now, with all the fighters caught up, we now have the Sanngrior up against... @l0kki's Wunderwaffle III Ausf I. Now at first glance, the I looks like a slight change on the old H. But then you notice the 20 ton weight...and the two whiplash engines...this thing was designed for speed. Aaannnd it definitely has it. Weight per motor is pretty low at 5 tons per motor, but maneuverability is pretty abysmal...so will speed win over maneuverability?

So...no...not really. Fight one was VERY close, a 2-3 battle mostly won by guns. However, the second was far more one-sided. In the first battle, the Waffles lead the Sanns up to high altitude (5km+) for engagement, which drew away from the Sann's high maneuverability and more as a speed battle. However, in the second, all aircraft stayed low, and the sanns tore the waffles apart. Overall, lose some weight, change those whiplashes out for more panthers, or maybe just start from scratch?

With this fight, all fighters in the running (short of earthlinger's ground attack preview craft with movable vulcans) should have been tested. If i have missed your craft, please let me know.

I could give you the link for the improved Lancer ASF (not the kerbalx preview) but it's quite similar to the one that already went against the Sanns, so I'd rather wait a couple days and do more testing :)

You can tell that @Thor Wotansen's planes are holding to their spots on the roster for dear life :D

So, I maaaaaaaaaay have gotten a bit distracted by school (and the trial version of Destiny 2). Oh well, at least I have... inspiration!

Better to be distracted from a game by school then to be distracted from school by a game.

True, that. I finished my physics course in 4 days :D (It was super easy - the standards where I live right now are low compared to where I lived before - and I really only read the textbook in four days. I have yet to master everything I learned, but I'll do that over Christmas break)

Alright, so i decided to go for the cheapest, smallest, lightest air superiority fighter in the competition, the Micron IR

XOlUfTd.png

27 parts total, 1.9t with a pair of sidewinders, a vulcan and ammo. Runs off that really loud engine the Pachy uses.

Edit, 3:10pm EST: Updated design to kill itself less

You beat the sanngrior, so absolutely. Still a bit unwieldy but a lot more maneuverable. Video will go up late tonight and you'll face the resoup then. Also, how long have you had six vulcans on the nose of this thing? holy crap.

idk

i just thought i had excess ammo so i went into high intensity forcibly entering intestine with piece of tissue filled with blood mode

(you said to watch my language earlier)

Btw can you also give an updated list on the top 5

Ok lets just stay away from hardcore cursing/swearing and well be fine. I didnt need a scientific description of that. List is in flux atm, it is either

Mini val, dorito, novi, resoup, waffle i2 or dorito, novi, resoup, waffle, sanngrior.

Both of these are likely to change rapidly

Alright, now it's time for @Mukita12's CI-6, a supermaneuverable twin-engine fighter going up against the Sanngrior. So who will reign supreme?

Unfortunately for the CI-6, the "supermaneuverability" is really just a case of bad CG. The CIs couldn't even get out to a 15km distance at first as they were more likely to flip or hover than to actually fly a straight line. Because of this, the first fight was started at 13km, and the second had the CI-6's fuel cut back to just 200 units an engine to move the cg and reduce weight. In the first fight, rather than dodging missiles, the CIs bled off all their airspeed and got way too slow to dodge missiles in the process, dooming them. The second wasn't much better.  The CIs managed a single kill, but overall were whipped by the Sanngriors.

Damn it I should Retire CI 6 Earlier

The question of evolution vs revolution is hard to answer. Look at the wunderwaffle, its first iterations weren't able to keep up with the original queue aircraft, where the latest iteration has clawed out at least a #5 spot, same with the Fighter 3 design, but not the fighter 2 design. Sometimes you must choose to refine, and others you must innovate. Don't beat yourself up over that decision.

Alrighty ladies and gents, we have a bit of a shakeup battle tonight. In the left corner, we have the last remnant of @Thor Wotansen's design genius in the Sanngrior, facing off against the latest revision of @l0kki's Wunderwaffle. L0kki has managed to shear three tons of weight, bringing the weight to a very decent four tons per engine, even if he's kept the wing from the two-engine variant for the four-engine variant. He's also managed to keep the fangs on this craft, stocking six AIM-120s, two AIM-9s, and six vulcan cannons in close proximity on the nose with a grand total of 2500 rounds, giving it about 20 seconds of fire time. This is quite literally the opposite of the Sanngrior, a fighter that uses its maneuverability and single cannon to be as lethal as possible. So who will prevail?\

In out first battle, the Waffle bites back, using its low drag to thrust to screech across the missile gap at over 400m/s, a wise move, considering the Sanngriors are notoriously difficult to lock onto. However, after trading blows, an injured Waffle, after having an engine shot out by a Sanngrior in a head-on pass, still manages to scratch the last Sanngrior with a gun kill at close range.

In the second battle, the Waffles really dominate, after the Sanngriors heat-seeking armament backfires and knocks out one of its own! The waffles bite back, knocking the rest of the notoriously difficult sanngrior drones out 3-0

So in short, we have a new #5, a product of constant revision and sanic the hedgehog speed. But how far will such an armament take this craft?

Alright, and for our second battle with the Wunderwaffle, we have the ReSoup defending its #4 spot. Now, with a bigger radar signature to lock onto, it should be a much easier task for the Waffle to get missiles on target..but will this be the case? It is going up, once again, against a craft with an absurd thrust to weight ratio (same engines, 5t less weight), and much more maneuverability...right?

In battle 1, the Waffles get devoured by the ReSoups, 0-3

In battle 2, there's a surprising reversal as the Waffles gain the upper hand with their initial missile volley

In battle 3, a major flaw of the Waffle is revealed, as a waffle blows itself up with its own missile. However, the waffles' missile spam manages to knock out another soup and level the playing field, winning the Waffles the #4 spot.

And for our next battle, we have the Wunderwaffle up against the notorious Novi, fighting for the #3 spot...who will win this one?

The Waffles have their moment in Battle 2, but the Novi dominate as usual, cementing the Waffle's #4 spot.

not necessarily a bad thing. Means better fighters are being introduced, and competition is getting more intense.

Why do you say to ignore the fuel?

It runs out of fuel quick; price to pay for ultra-high maneuverability.

And units are standard. You can tell what unit goes to what just by looking.
