A Comprehensive List of the Lowest & Highest Geographical Locations & Altitudes for Celestial Bodies

Below are charts locating the lowest and highest locations with their respective altitudes for bodies regularly featured in KSP in the Lat/Long = Degrees, Minute, Seconds and Decimal Degrees format.

Why are these locations useful...? I don't know, it's just interesting, right? This information is not typically listed and/or can sometimes not be readily available so its nice to have it collated in one place.

Great stuff. I am probably just missing something obvious, but Eeloo is missing and Gilly's number seem off. Even the lowest point is larger than the diameter of the tiny moon.

Eeloo is listed as a moon of Sarnus as per the OPM system, however, the body does not change.

With respect to how Gilly's altitude seems high, it's how the PQS system that governs terrain generation works and that the noise systems here work in an additive fashion. Basically, the bodies are formed as perfect sphere then mathematical noise is added on top of this surface (or taken away with negative values on these curves). Specifically, Gilly has a radius of 13,000m but Gilly's first terrain PQS mod (VertexSimplexHeightAltitude) has a deformity amplitude of 8,000m... which is about 60% of its total radius size.

Not knowing about this thread, I've decided yesterday to get to the tallest point. This time it was easier because of paragliders.

Wiki says: "with the tallest peak being 6764.1 m in altitude", Kerbalmaps says " 6761.0483 m", and I've found a point 6767.4 m high which confirms the screenshot on wiki.

7AE9C6DF1D6FD8DC21C273DE9CEA20053D0146C3

I've made Jebediah walk on all those adjacent peaks and none of them show higher values. They're all ten or more metres lower.

Mind that my terrain rendering and other graphics details are maxed out, and I don't use any terrain altering mods.

So I really don't see where your value of 6768.6 m came from. :/

Nevertheless, it's good to have such table. I recommend placing it in KSP wiki pages somewhere.

The figures were obtained by the scanning of the body's PQS mesh at a resolution of 0.001 Decimal Degrees. The fact that the figure I posted was within 1.5m is not bad considering the Wiki difference is 3m and KerbalMaps being 6m.

Do I have to put a Disclaimer in the OP stating all figures may be subject to a few meters difference? :P

You might. Thing is, if there's an error of few metres, having decimal digits isn't really useful.

All these bodies should be surveyed. Forumers used to do that. It's too much work for just one person.

Well I rounded the altitude figures to the more conservative estimate integer as that is more representative as you say.

On the topic of in-game surveying... be my guest. :D I have also included the Decimal Degree coordinates too as I think mods use these figures to relocate craft.

Really tall Kerbal (male vs female)?

High-heeled spaceboots?

Slight seismic tremors at the moment of measurement?

Mohos lowest point is at the North Pole of the planet.

This is actually incorrect but I would forgive anyone believing this, the bottom of the Mohole is actually around 300m above Sea Level, which is higher than the Lowest Point listed above. Granted, the Mohole hole is around 4.6km deep, so it just feels very, very low.

Here a suggestion - not sure if it's worth the effort to do it though - a similar table, but for the highest and lowest point when in a 0 inclination orbit around the body. (ie equatorial heights only)

So if you use a polar Orbit, you'd use the first table. If you use the equatorial orbit, you'd use the 'other table' as it would be specific to 0degree inclination.

Monkey blades, Bop has a feature height of over 21.7km?!  And it's pretty near the equator?  Treacherous.

Ike is way more problematic considering its value when doing irregular Duna capture gravity assists.
"10km should be fine" were the last words of one of my Duna crews.

They are useful in my opinion for two reasons:

For planets with atmosphere....like Eve, I'd say it's the best place to land or make a base (if you can find a flat bit near there) so you need less delta V to take off again.

For planets with no atmosphere it tells you the lowest altitude you can orbit and not worry about a mountain impact....

So, thanks!
