KSP console version - proof pls

Recommended Posts

If anyone has actually made it back from duna using the console version only of KSP please post a vid or link.   I would really like to see your build.  I’ve spent weeks and an unimaginable amount of hours trying to get to and back from anything but the mun or minimus on the console version of KSP and the closest I got was PE of Kerbin only to run out of fuel.   I really really like this game but at this point it has become unejoyable due to sheer frustration and I’m almost convinced it’s not possible.

Thank you in advance for your vids or help.

Its rather funny that I have no issue docking or building a space station in orbit even though the game says it’s the hardest thing to do in space, but I have not had one build make it back yet from one of the main planets,  the sheer amount of tries by now should have got me at least one landing.

Welcome to the forums. Sorry you are having troubles.

Do you understand that there are fairly specific launch windows to reach all the other planets? It is also possible to save quite a bit of fuel by aerobraking at Duna, and then when you get back to Kerbin too. Additionally, refueling your interplanetary rocket at Minmus makes traveling to Duna pretty trivial if your orbital transfers are even marginally efficient.

If you try to launch the whole thing in one shot from Kerbin, then it does take quite a bit of deltaV to get to Duna and back. However, depending on how far away your trajectory is from a Hohmann transfer -- you can easily waste an immense amount of deltaV at the Duna end of your trip.

I'll try to post some pics for you later.

Manned/unmanned? With/without landing?

Okay let's say manned without landing, for the start (because that's the only one I remember) I don't have console edition but I did made it to Duna and back using only stock parts a while ago.

First off, assemble the ship in orbit.

So a capsule, obviously, maybe some experiments in cargo bay, RCS tank, end it with docking port Sr.

For second launch, two orange tanks, filled only with LF (or empty, to refuel in orbit) and three nukes in an adapter. Connect this to first part and you're done with the ship.

Then there are technical things about transfer windows etc.

I've just done a Duna flyby, with crew of 3 Kerbals, in a rather minimal upgrade of the same launcher I use to land Kerbals on Minmus.  I launched in a good window, got a clean flyby of both Duna and Ike, and then cut inside Eve's orbit on the way back to get a Kerbin encounter in less than several years.  Total mission duration is looking like just over 600 days, close to a Kerbin year and a half.

My rocket was a Twin Boar with a 6400 tank on top and a 200 tank on top of that, six asparagus boosters, each consisting of three FL-T800 tanks, a nose cone, a Sepratron, and a Skiff, then a transfer stage, 6400 tank with a Poodle.  On top of all this was a Mk. 1-3 Command pod, well decked out with science gear.  The  core was (as planned) about 100 m/s short of stable LKO when fuel was gone, and from there it's been just the 6400 tank and Poodle.  The Mun/Minmus landing version uses only two boosters and a 3200 tank transfer/landing stage.

FWIW, I'm a little concerned about my shaved heat shield (60% ablator, 480 total instead of the original 800), and I'm going to be close to bingo fuel when I finish the correction burn to fine tune my Kerbin encounter, but I'm fairly sure I'll get the Kerbonauts home intact.

Do u know about the things that @bewing said? If u got something that can Land on the mun and come back u should be able to at least fly by duna.

I use Olex to get the transfer windows it also tells u the dv for the burn other dv i get from the CheatSheet, it has a dv map.

I dont have a Video but thats the stuff at duna now.

The lander has the 3crewpod wich is pretty heavy but i wanted to use it. It also has to much dv so i can get in the Polar regions and back.

That's the Station, it has a Probe for mining Ore at ike.

And that does carry crew and tourist

Edit:

@Devinous If Ive done the math right that should get from low kerbin orbit to Duna, land and come back when aerocaptured at duna

I'll try that and upload that if u want to, it works

It's certainly doable, and I'm sure plenty of folks can give you helpful general advice.

However... as you've discovered, there are an awful lot more ways to "do it wrong" in KSP than there are to do it "right".  ;) So, for example, "I'm having trouble" is a fairly general statement-- there are many different  kinds of trouble you might be having, and it's hard to give specific advice if we don't understand exactly what the trouble is.  A few examples of potential problem areas:

  • Designing a ship that doesn't have enough dV
  • Designing a ship that has issues with aerodynamics
  • Designing a ship with inappropriate TWR
  • Inefficient ascent path to LKO
  • Inefficient transfer from LKO to Mun, or Minmus, or Duna, or wherever
  • Inefficient landing technique
  • ...the list goes on.

All of the above can happen, and can happen easily.  And it can be really hard for you to tell which problem you're having, if you're new to the game, because often there isn't obvious feedback-- e.g. you could be following a hideously inefficient path to orbit without realizing it, because it's not as though the game lights up a little red warning light to tell you "this is wrong".  All you know is that "the mission didn't work", but you're left without knowing why.  And we've all been there, so yes, we feel your pain.  ;)

So the best thing to do is to give us more info about what you're running into-- that way we may be able to recognize where you're going off the rails ('coz we've been there), even if it's not obvious to you.  And then hopefully we can give you some advice that will get to the actual root of your problem.

So, aside from the helpful advice already offered:  if you could post a screenshot of a ship you were using to make the attempt, we could take that as a starting point just to get the ball rolling.  Yes, I know it's a bit awkward to get a "screenshot" if you're playing console, but even just an actual photograph of your screen could be helpful.

 @Devinous

You mention console version.  Can't speak for the PS4, but if you're on Xbox you can take screenshots by pressing the Xbox button and then Y.  Navigate to your captures (it's an icon that looks like old school film) and poke around until you find an option to upload to OneDrive.  Then you can upload that image to an imgur account or some other third party photo hosting website and we can take a look at your craft.  Easy! ;)

On PS4 a screenshot is relatively easy, too. You hold down the Share button for about a second and a screenshot gets stored locally. From there, it's theoretically possible to upload it -- but I always upload mine to a flash drive, then move them onto a PC.
