Where is my ship file for a saved game?

I have a game going and within that game I have a saved game that I did using the "load save button".  For some reason, if I open that saved mission there is an aircraft I built that I can fly but is not in the Spaceplane Hangar.  I've gone into my saves folder and it is not appearing in my ships list either.  Is it only contained in the backup persistent file?  And if so, how to I get it back.  You can't revert to the SPH on a saved game within the game.

I'm looking in the Steam/steamapps/common/Kerbal Space Program/saves/my game/ships There is also the backup folder in this same folder.

My guess would be that the original craft file got overwritten.  Like building something, launching it, getting back into the SPH/VAB, building another thing, and never saving the first under a new name.  This would overwrite the auto-saved ship.
