OHara
I had intended to switch to version 1.6.1, but in fact I stayed with 1.3.1 until after version 1.7.3 came out. Version 1.3.1 was is very nice for a lot of the reasons in the top post, and version 1.7.3 shares a lot of those advantages. Each of 1.3.1 and 1.7.3 was the version just before switching to a new version of Unity, which might improve performance but also seems to uncover bugs. A lot of code inadvertently depends on undefined assumptions about the behavior of library it uses, and the worse the documentation of the library, the more behavior is undefined. The new version of the library is liable to violate those mistaken assumptions, so what worked before no longer works. It is nice to have the ability to keep two versions of KSP around, the one we trust and the latest, so we can keep what we like and don't feel we are missing out. Starhelperdude
I joined with 1.7.3 to the game, might try out 1.3 if you all say it's good

But right now I cannot understand why someone would play on 1.3.1. FPS is far more important to me than bugs. After a ton of tests, I can get a very decent 30fps with 120+ parts. there is only one thing that I have witnessed however, it takes about 30 seconds to stabilize the physics load on 1.3.1 when you switch to a vessel. besides that, it's pretty fluid. A disadvantage I found is that multiple planet packs tends to throw exceptions. I have been able to have Outer Planets Mod running smooth in career mode and now I am adding The Boris System and another pretty cool one so far, TheWorldBeyond . Kernel Kraken
Oh man, forgot about this thread. I haven't played KSP since early 2019, probably before then. Planning on downloading it and being able to run cool crafts when I can find a GPU. I bet I'll leave the 1.3.1 club when it happens. I want to try the DLC! Lisias
If you are using anything from 2012 or older, you should probably stick with 1.3.1 to have fun. I had a old CrapMini 2.3 (late 2011), I5-2415M 2.9GHz boost, 16GB and HD 3000 graphics. It runs KSP 1.3.1 to 1.4.3 marvelously. Really good. From 1.4.4, however, that thing became a slide show. These machines are less and less relevant nowadays, but they are still available and used by some people - I had mine MacMini 2.3 doing secondary tasks until recently (these little beasts are resilient!), but for some people they may be the difference between playing KSP or not playing at all. I have notice that a lot of schools in USA still provide similar spec'ed notebooks for their students. Being able to play KSP on these machines, again, is the difference between playing KSP or not playing at all for a part of the intended audience, i.e., primary school students. AstroEvada
I feel like KSP 1.3.1 was the last of what you would call "old KSP"
The Flying Kerbal
I seem to keep going back to 1.2.2. I've tried most other versions, but there's just something about this one I really like. Maybe it's partly nostalgia, I learned to play "proper" KSP in 1.2.2, having played the old 1.0 Demo to death before paying for the game, but I genuinely just enjoy this version more than any other. I hadn't played any KSP for months, only just picking it again up a few days ago, but again, my new career is in this old stalwart. Tonight Gene Kerman pulled a really sneaky little stunt on one of his customers... Kerbodyne paid for a new satellite with no science, to be put into a retrograde Munar orbit. However, when nobody was looking and while Jeb and Val stood guard, Gene, Bob and Bill sneaked into the VAB and superglued a Goo Canister to the thing, hoping to deploy it in a rather underhand way, to grab some Munar science. Obviously after paying 114,000 to the KSA to have their satellite launched, if Kerbodyne find out about this sly little ploy, they're going to be casting curses and hexes on Gene and his cohorts for Halloween!
