Visiting the DRAO

Last week I went and visited the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia, Canada. There are a few radio telescopes there, the newest one being CHIME (Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment). You could spend two or three hours there, more if you visit on a day with the guided tour.

Anyone else been there?

I haven't been there, but I have been to the Hawaii observatory. It doesn't really have a tour, although it does have a visitor center at lower altitude, which hosts night time star gazing parties with telescopes. I visited in the day, so I just looked through a solar telescope. And I have pictures @Vanamonde. :)

Spoiler

It's amazing how close sea level is to high enough that you feel short of breath.

The observatories have signs saying to be careful of falling ice from the domes rotating, luckily it was pretty pleasant the day I was there:

You could walk right up to and around the observatories. The ground was completely barren at this altitude.

This was near the middle of summer in the northern hemisphere, so there was almost no shadow at noon.

There was also a volcano erupting. (sorry for the out of focus photo)
