Where are the files for quicksaves?

Recommended Posts

First off, I’d like to know where a forum post on this topic should go- I chose what I believe to be the correct category. If it is the wrong category, how should I change it?

I have about 300 quicksaves (as you can tell, I’m really good at this game) and I believe they are slowing down the game. It takes about 2 minutes to pull up the screen where I can load a quicksave, and much more time to delete only one.

I am wondering where the file is for the quicksaves so I can select and delete them all at once.

This forum is fine, I really can't think of a better place.   But you have to decide where to post, when you post, only a moderator can move it after.

The quicksaves are, coincidentally, under the saves folder.

I'm not sure though, if the number of QS's you have actually affects performance.  But other's with more knowledge should pipe in shortly, like Geonovast who ninja'd me there.

Where your KSP folder is will depend on your operating system and where you got the game from.

Thanks. I’ll wait for the info as it comes in.

When you go into the menu to load a save it presents some information like the Funds, Science, Reputation, etc for each save. This is stored in the .loadmeta files that accompany each .sfs save file. The delay accessing the save menus is that these have to be calculated for each save file when they don't exist which involves reading that information from each save. This can take a while if it has a lot of files to scan and your saves are large.

It really shouldn't be slowing down playing the game, only accessing the save menu. Another factor could be your harddrive performance. If it's a 5400rpm spinning disk this process is going to take a bit longer than a  NVMe SSD for the same set of files.

I use KISS (Kerbal Improved Save System) that creates timestamp named saves with F8, so I tend to create a lot of saves because it's trivial to do. I also have KAC creating saves when I use it to jump to ships. Every few days I go to my save directory (desktop shortcut) and clean out anything older than a day or so mainly to keep the list manageable. It's not unusual for me to flush 30-40 saves at a time.

I’d like to declare that it was not a good idea to delete saves from the file. It is a very bad idea.

Why?  I do it all the time.  Just don't delete the ones you need, like persistent.sfs.  As long as you have a persistent.sfs file in your save's folder, the game will load.

Okay. That must have been the problem. Thank you.

I’ve recovered the proper files and my gmame is functioning properly now.

No, it can be done rather safely. But there is an alternative... :)

Yes, and may I suggest another idea -

Instead of deleting them, I move them to a folder within My Documents (Windows 10). Within my KSP -Saved Games folder, I have sub-folders for the different versions I have on my system. So, that folder and sub folders look like this:

  • KSP - Saved Games
    • 1.3.0
      • Saved Games
      • Craft Files
    • 1.6.1
      • Saved Games
      • Craft Files

And on Friday night, I do a quick save but I name it YYYYMMDD - description of what ship is doing and then after I have exited KSP, I copy the quick save into the appropriate version folder. And I do the same thing to craft files if there have been major changes.

I hope this helps...
