KSP not autosaving or quicksaving

My three month (earth time) Dres expedition is coming to an end. I have completed the ejection burn and I'm on my way to intercept Kerbin. However, I just realised that KSP is not autosaving at all and I cannot quicksave either. Every time i try to quicksave, I press 'save' after naming my quicksave and the window disappears as usual but it normally takes a second or two but now it instantly closes and when I open up the 'load save' box, the quicksave is not there. So basically KSP is not saving any data at all. If I reload KSP it will jump back to the time I was already on Dres, which was over a year ago in Kerbin time. I do have mods installed but heres the thing:

It won't save or anything when my Dres vessel is active! If I started it with another vessel, it can autosave, quicksave and all. But not with my Dres vessel. I don't know what to do now, I'm not going to close KSP or do anything just in case it won't save like it does now. The last persistent.sfs file in the saves folder is the one from a year ago. Any ideas on what's going on? I have quicksaving and quickloading enabled so that's not the problem. Thanks!

Okay, I've got the log files and I've captured around Kerbin for the mean time. I can't switch vessels, go to the space center, tracking station and I cant even quit the game via the menus. Last time this happened i closed KSP and restarted it and went to my dres vessel but it had gone all the way back to when i first landed on dres. Where should i post the log files?

Anywhere that someone who's not you can then download them. Dropbox is popular.

Please note that it is EXTREMELY likely that - at best - you'll have to go back to your old save and lose what's happened today.

I'm aware of that now, I guess I'll have to accept defeat and continue...Here are the KSP.log and the output.log.txt files. However...since this is not my fault, can I cheat my way to Kerbin orbit from the surface of Dres? Since I've technically completed the contract, done tons of science and all and I've got back without cheating or quickloading at all and then KSP does this? :rolleyes:

Your save has a lot of errors while loading parts, missing textures and whatnot. I don't think they're causing this problem but I figure I'd just mention it :)

This error in ksp.log though bothers me:

[ERR 15:36:37.179] [SurfaceObject]: Cannot return to original parent, it no longer exists.

From a couple quick Google searches I see it relates to Kopernicus, and maybe setting Kerbin to orbit something else. I've no experience with that sort of thing though so I'm stabbing in the dark. Does any of that sound applicable? I see you are using Kopernicus but don't know what for. You mentioned Dres so I assume you're not using a pack that totally changes everything.

Any time I see a Null Reference Exception I get worried. I'm not sure what get_hasadjusters is but considering the ksp.log error I'm suspecting Kopernicus.

I tried to get Kopernicus like a year ago but since it didn't work I deleted it. That was KSP 1.4.1 and I've just switched to 1.6.1 a week ago with a fresh install of all mods via CKAN. I still have KSP up and now I started another KSP so there are two running. I want to check if i can quicksave in the new one. I just checked and I can get autosaves and quicksaves on all other crafts except the Dres vessel. I don't get how that happens though. I know where the missing textures are from. I removed some part files from Tantares since i wasnt using all of them so I moved the unused ones to another folder. That should be whats causing the texture error but I'm alright with that and I'll fix that later.

Well, one workaround if you can get saves working when you're not controlling the Dres craft, is to just use map mode to switch to another craft every time you want to quick save :D

Maybe - just maybe - everything will sort itself out when you recover or delete the ship. As to cheating it home if you personally feel you did the work, then of course it's okay. I'd use Alt-F12 to put it in the default Kerbin orbit, and then you can burn down to re-enter.

It's okay when I'm not controlling the Dres craft, KSP does everything it needs to properly- i can save, load, recover, switch vessels etc. The problem only occurs with the Dres craft. This would probably mean I can't recover it once it has landed. So my Dres crew is done....but I can't thank you enough for the help you've provided me with. I never knew some one would take time out of their life to fix someones else's problems so much. I appreciate it, thanks.

Why?  Cheat the ship to Kerbin orbit, then cheat a rescue craft into orbit, and EVA the kerbals over to the rescue ship, and recover that.

I cant, once i switch to the Dres vessel i cant switch back, go to the space center or anything...

Can you EVA?  You could EVA them out first, and then cheat the kerbals back home individually.

I did EVA but I still can't do anything after that. I would need to switch to the kerbals to make them enter the capsule but it seems that anything related to the dres vessel breaks the saving system. Great idea though, I'll give it another try and report back. Hopefully it works :)

Or just do what you have to do on the Dres spacecraft and then change spacecraft, save and then get back on the Dres spacecraft to continue your mission.

I have roughly the same errors than you and it never prevented me to save a game. 

If you can do it, switching crafts to save a game couls allow you to take back your kerbals home and then dispose of the vessel once it is back on Kerbin.

I guess there is a corruption on this specific spacecraft file. Once the craft disapears from the map, the problem should resolve itself.

If the problem comes from the craft file, check by cheating another ship from the same craft file around Dres just to be sure. Do you have other ships made from the same craft file currently in service in your space program? May be you modified te design after launch and the save file does not recognise it properly?

I tried that, as soon as I have the Dres vessel active, I can't switch vessels, save, quit to menu, go to space center/tracking station or anything. I did upgrade to KSP 1.6.1 a week ago but then I was able to continue with the mission after it, successfully visiting more biomes and being able to save. All the problems started yesterday and I didnt install any mods or modify anything before. The ship functions as it should and all, its just that KSP doesnt save or do anything when ths Dres vessel is active. I first thought that it was ksp not receiving permission to save in the saves file but if thats the case then it shouldn't work with any craft.

Do you have the respawn kerbals active in your settings? 

If you do, you can dismiss the ship from the tracking station and your kerbals will respawn in the astronaut complex sometimes afterwards by magic. Of course, you'll have lost any progression on their XP and the science data collected but not transmitted.

What you do afterwards is to put the kerbals into a new ship, cheat teleport it to Dres and continue your mission as if nothing happened.

I might have had the problem once and I don't remember how I solved it or if I solved it at all. Might just be that I deleted the spacecraft altogether from the tracking station, and I was fortunate enough for it to be space probe and not a crewed vessel.

The solution is quite radical and might make you lose some time on your mission calendar but it is the safest way I can imagine for you to continue with your space program.

The only other solution is to let the mission proceed with time accel but you won't be able to touche anything else obviously which might not be acceptable...
