It morphed into the ISS. NASDA signed up for Freedom, but got it on the ISS.

Yep. The US core of the ISS is essentially Freedom. Just has a bunch of Russian stuff hooked up at the back ;)

The interior looks so naively touching, compared to the chaos of wires, notebooks, and unknown random stuff in the real station.

To be fair, it was going to have two dedicated habitation modules, unlike the current one where you have a sleeping room/shelter in what should be a laboratory. Plus the connection between USOS and ROS is kinda hacky - they had to get every cables and ducts out from behind the cabinets through the APAS-95 docking port.

But hey ! Now we all have something in space, and we've had it for more than 2 decades together.

They made it way way too clean for the interior, but otherwise its neat seeing it.

Things tend to good look on paper. Plus I suspect that Skylab was short on the clutter compared with the longer-lasting Salyuts.

Despite multiple budget cuts and downgrades, ISS is really equivalent to Freedom in almost every way. Part of it is the fact that the Russian segment handles the duties of the cancelled American modules, part of it is the fact that management of the project really cleaned house during the Freedom-to-ISS transition in the mid-90s, and part of it's that the ISS is approaching the 30-year lifespan of Freedom despite being initially downgraded to 15.
