Try as I might, can not lock onto the Mun to explore even with probe.. cannot get orbit right .. always crashes back on Kerbal..

Unfortunately I don't understand what your problem is, so I cannot help you. Do you have one specific problem, or do you need more general advice on how to go to the Mun?

Try entering back to kerbin when returning to mun setting an orbit with a periapsis set at 40.000 meters and pointing to retrograde

Have you successfully orbited Kerbin? I wonder if you are just aiming at Mun and trying to fly straight at it. That will almost always give you a suborbital flight that just goes up and back down. If you are playing the Windows version there's a KSPedia PDF that explains the basics of getting to orbit and then to Mun.

Are you playing a sandbox, science, or contract game? If science or contract you might not have enough parts unlocked yet.

have you completed the training mission, "to the Mun, part 1"?
