I am hoping for a stock unmanned 'cockpit' that will be good to make probes with.. I know you can use mechjeb or other mods, but it's just not the same as vanilla..

Although I guess it wouldn't be a cockpit if no one could go in it.. It would be more like a better computer than the ASAS

LukeTim, try looking up Nuclear Thermal Rockets, I read about them the other day on Reddit :)

He was not referring to nuclear rockets. The principle of a jet turbine engine does not actually require internal combustion, only some mechanism of heat transfer. You could make a nuclear engine that uses a reactor driven jet turbine to create thrust in atmospheres with no oxygen, and without expending any stored propellant.

Now to be a little more on topic: I know that the devs have said that atmospheric engines will not work on other planets without oxygen, but I do plan on sending deployable engine probes into each atmosphere to see if any of them have oxygen anyway.

What's so interesting about taking a dip in a Gas Giant? You're just going to blow up your ship. That's all.

It depends on how far down you dip. The pressure isn't going to be an issue unless you've already lost the ability to come back out, then you'll just sink lower and lower until you get crumpled into a raisin... Mmmmmm, yummeh XD but as long as you don't go past the point of no return, there should be no reason why the pressure would be enough to even slightly harm your ship =3

My final guess is Jebidiah hooked up to wires in a tank full of blue-glowy water :)

Question: What would a Jool look like after you got below the first layer of "gas"? I don't think they made it very thick due to rendering issues. Then everyone would start to say "NASA called, they want their computer back." if you could even get close to Jool.

See, this is why I wanted to mess around with Jool and see how it was modeled. I hope it doesn't just have an invisible wall that you hit and then your craft just explodes =P but if it is that way then I understand why, no hard feelings on the devs XD

Just a thought, how do you guys think Jool will work in elevation and in the map view? Of course, 0 elevation could be the top of the atmosphere and might be used, but you can still go lower of course. Also, since you can go lower, the map view for your orbit will be in the planet if it includes the atmosphere. Just curious... :P

Im interested to hear about new parts or current part rebalancing, one question being how will the fuel bug fix affect current parts? Im not big on all the maths but i have heard that the parts dont quite match realistic power and efficiency values. I mean new parts would be awesome but i think this community could put anything anywhere given time and enough willing kebals.

The Isp values on Kerbal chemical thrusters in .16 are actually well within realistic ranges for chemical thrusters. The small SRBs I'm not so sure about, but with methane/oxygen and hydrogen/oxygen propellant mixes boasting theoretical maximum Isp of around 370s and 450s respectively, Kerbal liquid engines are within the realm of possibility. Their thrust ratings may be somewhat low for their sizes, though, relative to Earth engines.

Ki11aWi11, on the one hand, you're right; but on the other - the humanity still can't send manned missions even to the Mars, and hadn't fly even to the Moon near an half of century. And we haven't send such missions to asteroids. But Kerbals have. So, why they can fly to asteroids, to the moons, to the other planets, but can't go to the Jool?

The only reason I see is it's monstrous gravity. But I don't think it is overmastering obstacle for green guys, they'll just send heavy rockets to Jool's upper atmoshere non-returnable mission (hardcore) or drone (softcore).

I will without a doubt send a probe into Jool's atmosphere to see how far it descends before it implodes, however I don't think there will be even a slight chance of it returning, unless you somehow skimmed it through the upper km of Jool's atmosphere...

That gives me an idea for doing a flyby of planets then returning home, you do your flyby of the inner planets, then once you get to Jool you aerobrake into an orbit that crosses Kerbin's. This is just a rough idea, but with some tweaking it could work.

On the discussion of new .17 parts, I think that a choice few will be added, including an adapter from 1m-3m and vice versa, a 3m RCS tank, and another engine perhaps if they get around to it.

I have found that doing flybys of the planets will be incredibly easy (at least in the way of lag). The Odin Launcher included in NovaPunch was capable of reaching 4.5 km/s starting from a 75 km orbit, which, according to olex's magnificent calculator, is enough to reach every planet but Moho. The biggest rocket included reached 6.3 km/s from the same starting point, 300 m/s short of reaching Moho. Even the super heavy rocket causes minimal lag because of the absolutely massive fuel tanks included in NP. Also, another viable option to take would be a bi-elliptic transfer, the same one used in sundives.

EDIT: Crap, I forgot to see that missions to Eve and Moho have to be in retrograde orbits.

TL;DR YAY! Planets are not completely inaccessible to those of us with crappy computers!

I hope the developers will do something to optimize the Game enough for my notebook  That feel when you watch slideshow about your rocket... :(

OT; That feeling when you pay $1000 on computer parts to play a game you payed 7 dollars for and it still lags in places.

Does it need optimization now? No.

Later? Yes.
