Overturned landed vessels Remedy

Recommended Posts

Hi, i just discovered by chance that opening a cargo bay can make your fallen vessels stand again.

Now i dont mind so much landing on inclined surfaces of Mun or Minmus, as small vessels with cargo bay still can save the day.

Hope this helps someone,

regards!

I've been saved by cargo bay doors a few times after toppling over. Although, the segmented folding doors on the newer redesigned service bays don't provide much leverage unless you are on particularly low gravity bodies like Minmus.

Toggling landing legs is often a handy option in such cases, of course, especially now that you can remove one or a few of them from symmetry to provide asymmetric action. Granted, the most effective strategy is to build a lander with a wide stable base so that it doesn't fall over in the first place. But that comes with its own difficulties when trying to launch a less aerodynamic payload.

2 more uses:

1. Backup set of wings.  When the main wings rip off an aircraft, I just open the cargo doors and try to land.  This has saved many a pilot.

2. Retractable fins.  When a craft is supposed to reenter in the same orientation as it went up, stick a cargo bay or two (or eight) at the top.

This, combined with a little axial rotation can help get a top-heavy lander to swivel upright. Plus it has the added benefit of looking like your lander has been taken breakdance lessons.

I've found small tubular ships with reaction wheels but not enough oomph to right themselves can instead spin like a top, and they will frequently spin themselves vertical.

F5 first because half the time you end up on your nose instead of your engine.

And more than half the time, something on your rocket explodes.

Not exactly on the same topic, but IMHO close enough and probably helpful to some:
I found that setting SAS to "radial out" in "surface" mode will help keeping your craft upright so that you don't need to worry about righting an upturned craft. (And hitting the "Z" key in case the slope was more inclined than I expected...)

Ah, you didn't need that parachute anyhow, did you?
