Is the probe core in hibernate mode? If Yes, switch it off and leave 'Hibernate in warp' on so it saves power during time warp.

Do you have any antennas on the probe? If No, put some on there just in case.

Do you have any signal-related mods installed? CommNet Constellation, RemoteTech, anything that messes with the DSN in any way?

What are the settings for the CommNet and antenna ranges (Escape > Settings > Advanced tab I believe)? If you switch either to 0 then you won't get any signal...

What are your difficulty settings relating to commnet? What mods if any are installed? Does the probe have power?

Also, post your log. This may be a game problem and not a game play problem.

That would be my other question.  If you are launching from, say, the desert launch site and have other groundstations disabled, you wouldn't have a connection to KSC, so you wouldn't have full probe control.
